Would You Buy Marilyn Monroe’s Menorah?

A menorah that belonged to Marilyn Monroe will be auctioned off this Thursday. Experts are predicting it could sell for $150,000. While this is definitely a one-of-a-kind piece, that’s a lot of money.

According to the description, it’s brass-plated and plays Israel’s National anthem.

Most people would love to own a bit of history, yet there are always a few haters. I was so sad to see negative comments claiming Marilyn wasn’t a “real Jew, just a convert.” Not only is that inaccurate, it’s offensive. That’s the same trash that used to be said about Elizabeth Taylor and is now said about Ivanka Trump.

A Jew by choice is just as valuable as a Jew by heritage. There should never be a distinction or divide. We are one people; we need to love and support each other.

Fascinating! I have never before read about Monroe converting. Was she Jewish at the time of her death and was she observant?

She was not observant, but she was curious. I don’t think she would’ve converted without her husband’s encouragement (Playwright Arthur Miller). Joe DiMaggio certainly wasn’t Jewish and she was married to him before. At the time of her death, I would assume she was still Jewish. She never renounced the conversion.

As if there could be such a thing as “real” or “fake” Jews to begin with. A convert is the same! Any Rabbi would say that. People who shame converts are hateful bigots.

It’s not just in Judaism where this happens either. I knew a woman who had converted to Mormonism and she told me once she was converted she realized that they treat people whose families have been Mormons for generations very differently from how they treat recent converts. It was very difficult for her.

That one surprises me because the Mormon try to recruit so aggressively. They send missionaries all around the world, even to places where they’ve clearly not wanted. I hate this sort of smugness. A convert should be viewed exactly the same as someone born into the faith. People are so petty.

If I had enough money to spend$150K or so on the item I just love, I would buy it. I love Marylin as a person (even though I never knew her), and I would like to have something that belonged to her. For all and all, I have a menora from some relatives I never knew too (and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like them as people), so why not? Also, I think that being Jewish by choice takes a lot of strength and bravery, much more that to be Jewish by birth.

I love learning new things so thank you! And I agree with not dividing by differentiating between being Jewish by birth or by conversion. That’s just ridiculous.
