Memorial Day Menu

a2

Many grocery stores are having huge sales for the holiday weekend. I’ll be basing my Memorial Day menu on the deals at Shaw’s. For less than $20.00, I can put together a cheap, delicious feast!

a3

Boneless chicken: $1.99/Lb. (I’ll be marinating in BBQ sauce. If you’re expecting a big crowd, do sliders instead of whole pieces.)

a1

Corn: 10 ears for $1.77.  (If you have extras, try making Santa Fe Chicken.)

a1

Watermelon: $4.44.  (Slice it or cut into chunks. Tons of fruit for little $)

a1

Coke products, 12-packs: 5 for $10.00.   (You don’t have to buy 5 for the sale price.)

a1

Hood ice cream: $1.99, with a $1.00/2 coupon.  (I’m getting the limited edition Boston Red Sox flavors)

I’ll also be making broccoli slaw from ingredients I have on hand. This is much more junk food than I normally eat, but I enjoy a treat occasionally.

If you live outside of New England and don’t have access to Shaw’s, search through your local flyers. Deals and prices vary, but each region has something good to offer!

Super Savings Saturday – 5/24

a1

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday. This was a good week for me, with lots of deals—some of which I found spur of the moment. The only downer was Rite Aid; everything I wanted was out, so it was nothing but Rain Checks.

Target:  2 Market Pantry Reduced Fat crackers, on sale for $1.58 each. I used a $1.00/2 Mobile coupon. Total: $1.08 each!

Pink lemonade, details here. Total: $0.14!

2 Up & Up toilet brushes, details here. Total: $0.44 each!

Neuro Sleep water, $2.39. I used a free product coupon. Total: Free!

a1

Walmart: Ground beef and Hamburger Helper deal, featured here. Total: $2.00 after rebate!

a1

Walgreens: I did 2 transactions for maximum savings.

Transaction #1: Coconut oil deal, featured here. Total: $6.00, plus an $8.00 Register Reward.

a1

Transaction #2:  1 Velveeta Cheesy Skillet, $1.99, with a $1.99 Register Reward.

2 Fiber Smart Natural Triple Fibers, clearance price $3.99 each. I used 2 $2.00 Manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $1.99 each.

1 Fiber Smart Chia Seeds, clearance price $3.79. I used a $2.00 Manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $1.79 each.

I paid for the Velveeta and the Fiber Smart with the $8.00 Register Reward, so those items cost me nothing out of pocket! (I added in a cheap candy for the overage and it was an exact amount.) Plus, I have $1.99 for future deals. Since the Fiber Smart is usually $15.99 each, I think it’s an awesome price. The crackers and lemonade will be good for snack attacks and the boxed food will all be donated. This is why I love to coupon!

Amazing DIY Shower Favors – Part Two

a1

In Part One, we learned how to make wrapped plants. Today, my sister, Jackie, will share her beautiful seed favors! I’m not the artist she is, so I’m really enjoying her tips on crafting…

Seed Favors

If wrapped plants seem like too much work, try making seed favors. These are equally affordable, but come together much quicker. (If you’re crafty like me, make both!) To make a dozen seed favors, you will need:

12 Organza pouches

Seeds  (I used Morning Glory)

12  2″ x 1″ plastic bags

12  2″ terra-cotta pots

12 peat pellets

a3

I found the pouches on sale 6/$1.00, the plastic bags were 100/$1.00 and the pots were $0.32 each. I had peat and seeds on hand from my garden, but if you need those, they won’t be too expensive—look for sales or clearance.

a1

To assemble:

You can put a seed envelope straight into the pouch, or if using seeds, I put approximately 30 seeds into each plastic bag. Put seed pack and 1 peat round into the organza pouch. Done! (How simple was that?!)

a1

Pair the pouch and a terra cotta pot inside a gift bag. You can buy them, but I’d rather make my own. Stay tuned for my next post on how to make gift bags!

The Ideal Wardrobe – Belts

a3

Formerly utilitarian, now they’re strictly a statement piece. So, are belts even necessary? Not at all! But if you like them, they can be a great accessory. I have mixed feelings on belts and only wear them occasionally. When done right, the look is awesome, so I do think they’re worth trying. (If you never wear belts, I recommend removing the loops from pants.) If you’re large in the midsection, I’d skip belts completely. After all, you don’t want to highlight an area that makes you uncomfortable. Belts look best on Hourglass and thin builds.

When buying a belt, the considerations are size, color, and material.

Size:

The proper fit for a belt is at the natural waist. It should define without pinching. The fabric underneath should not be bunched. Belts that come in S/M/L have the most give. If you buy a numbered belt, buy the next size up to take clothing into account (A 28 waist would buy a size 30 belt and so on). Be careful with the buckle. Big buckles can be distracting. If you wear mostly gold, get a gold buckle and vice versa for silver enthusiasts.

Material:

A real leather belt is the nicest. I’m not against synthetics, but some are total garbage. Use your own good judgment. Chain belts made of metal are very cute with jeans. Fabric belts are nice tied over a maxi dress. Elastic belts are the most forgiving. I’m not into braided belts at all.

a2

Color:

Black or brown belts give the most mileage. A colorful belt can be cute, but it attracts a lot of attention and can be limiting if you like Mix-and-Match outfits.

a1

Wide belt:

I wouldn’t wear the dress pictured above, but you can see how a wide belt pairs perfectly with it. I like to wear a wide belt with a tucked-in top and a pleated skirt. Wide belts are not as good with pants, but they do work with certain outfits, like a V-neck top and skinnies. If you’re going wide, get one made from elastic rather than leather. Huge leather belts look bad and pleather look infinitely worse! Be reasonable on size, this isn’t the WWE.

a1

Thin belt:

Pairs equally well for pants, skirts, and dresses. If you’re belt-shy, start with a skinny belt.

a1

Chain belt:

Look for something with small links, or it’s complete overkill. Try to match the metal with any other jewelry you’re wearing for a cohesive look. A belt this eye catching works with just earrings. Don’t add a necklace, pins, etc when wearing a chain belt.

Belts to avoid:

a2

Big symbol buckles  (are you in the Rodeo? Didn’t think so…)

a1

Anything with sequins

a1

Animal prints  (I’m not against all animal prints, but it should be done in small doses only)
