My Labor Day Menu

a1

It’s hard to believe it’s almost time for Labor Day already! Growing up, we always did two things: watched the Jerry Lewis Telethon and feasted. The telethon is a sad shell of its former glory, but good food still abounds. I’m hoping for a low-key holiday, with nice weather that’s not too hot or humid!

As usual, I will be planning my menu around the store sales. The best ones seem to be at Hannaford. I’m not sure about Shaw’s, since their Labor Day ad isn’t out yet. (Their ads start on Friday for the upcoming week, while every other store in my area starts on Sunday.)

a2

Here are the best Hannaford sale items:

* Ground beef, $2.29/Lb  (That’s the cheapest I’ve seen it in ages!)

* Corn, 5/$1.00. (Other than Memorial Day, this is the cheapest price and will probably be the last fresh corn for the season.)

* Whole watermelon, $3.99. (Have I mentioned how addicted I am to watermelon? Yum!)

* Boneless, skinless chicken, $1.99/Lb. (Good sale price, but not extraordinary.)

* Coke product 12-packs, $2.00. (Same price as Memorial Day and I will be stocking up on Diet Coke, big time!)

a3

My Labor Day Menu:

*  Hamburgers

*  Green salad

*  Corn on the cob

*  Slices of watermelon

*  Buffalo chicken strips

*  Potato salad (No special sales, we just want it!)

a3

All of these tasty treats will be paired with tons of soda and for dessert, some awesome Klondike bars (very big sale, which I will feature in Super Savings Saturday).

What do you eat on Labor Day?

Super Savings Saturday – 8/23

a3

It’s Saturday, it’s Super, and it’s time for Savings!

This week was rather chaotic. Hungry Bear hurt his knee at work and we had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night! He has to wear a knee brace and use crutches—for an undetermined amount of time. He was in so much pain when it happened and it’s been really rough on my Bear!

In other personal news, someone I’m related to through marriage died unexpectedly at the age of 32. He has a 1.5 year old son and it’s truly heartbreaking. I feel beyond badly for everyone involved! I’ve been estranged from these relatives for many years, so it’s even weirder and worse. I’m praying everyone can find comfort (somehow) during this ordeal.

Ok, enough rambling…onto the savings! I only shopped two stores this week, Shaw’s and Rite Aid.

a4

Shaw’s:

2 Cheddar Chex Mix, on sale $1.00. I used 2 $0.50 Manufacturer’s coupons (doubled). Total: Free!

2 Pirate’s Booty Mac and Cheese, details here. Total: Free!  (This was out of stock for weeks.)

2 Super Chill soda, on sale $2.50. I used a $1.50/2 Manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $1.75 each!  (Not as good as Diet Coke, but ok for the price.)

2 containers of cherry tomatoes, on sale $0.97. Total: $1.94!

2 Premium Romaine salad mixes, on sale $0.97. Total: $1.94!

Blue Bunny mini swirl cones, on sale $2.99. I used a $0.75 Manufacturer’s coupon (doubled). Total: $1.50!  (Blue Bunny emails a coupon monthly if you sign up for their newsletter.)

a4

Rite Aid:

Zim’s Max Freeze, on sale $5.00. I used a $2.00 Manufacturer’s coupon and a $3 UP reward. Total: Free, plus $5 Up reward!  (Perfect timing for this deal; it came in very handy for the bad knee!)

When I write it all out, it seems like far less than usual, but sometimes real life gets in the way. Hopefully, next week I’ll find more cheapies and freebies, but this haul was still decent.

Did you find any great deals this week? Everyone is welcome to add them to the comments!

Biblical Beauty: Book Review & Giveaway!

a1

I love anything to do with health/beauty and one of the freshest, most unique beauty books I’ve ever read is Biblical Beauty, written by Rachelle Weisberger.

Rachelle is a highly sought-after makeup artist and skin care specialist who put a lifetime of knowledge into a practical guide to help all ladies discover their true beauty.

Combining modern solutions with ancient secrets from our Biblical foremothers, she has created a true gem! Biblical Beauty is divided into concise chapters covering a wealth of information:

Skin Care   (referencing Bathsheba)

Sun Care   (referencing Deborah)

Makeup   (referencing Rahab)

Hair Care   (referencing Judith)

Fragrance   (referencing Esther)

Jewelry   (referencing Rebecca)

Healthy Aging   (referencing Sarah)

Biblical Beauty also has some excellent information on work/family balance, mothering, politics, and business in these sections:

Choices in Motherhood   (referencing Leah, Rachel, Sarah, and Rebecca.)

Feminine Leadership   (referencing Miriam, Deborah, and Esther.)

In particular, I enjoyed the diet tips for healthy eating. I can’t wait to try a recipe for “Rainbow Salad,” which is a mix of fresh veggies, eggs, nuts, and seeds. (Sounds delish!)

Another insider tip that’s awesome: Contact lens wearers should avoid lash-lengthening mascara, because the fibers can be irritating. I’m guilty of breaking that advice, and it’s so true. Get a gentle mascara, ladies!

Rachelle has generously offered to give one lucky reader a free copy of Biblical Beauty! This Giveaway will be open until September 13. Good luck!
