Should Jewish Professionals Represent Anti-Semites?

Not liking co-workers and clients is something anyone who’s employed has had to deal with during their career—most of us accept that as a normal part of the job. But what about truly offensive individuals who are downright evil? Should they be represented, and if so, by whom? Consider these two cases where Jewish professionals agreed to help open and notorious anti-Semites with bad results:

Dylann Roof, who committed mass murder at a Charleston church, is trying to fire his Jewish and Indian lawyers, calling them his “biological enemies.” The lawyers are actually fighting to remain on the case.

Tanya Gersh, a Montana realtor, was viciously terrorized by a troll mob after agreeing to represent Richard Spencer’s mother as a listing agent. She and her family literally had to flee for their lives as a result.

While I have immense sympathy for anyone who is being targeted and publically harassed and humiliated, I am truly puzzled that a Jewish professional would choose to represent an anti-Semite. It is certainly not a choice that I would make.

As many of my readers know, I was a realtor before I was a blogger, so I’m familiar with how that occupation works. Realtors have a lot of flexibility; they can pick their own clients and set their own commissions. Mrs. Gersh was aware of the Spencer family’s ties to the White Nationalist agenda, and obviously that would be the polar opposite of her own ideology. Why she ever would willingly involve herself is truly beyond me. (That’s not to say she did something wrong or bad, just that it wasn’t the wisest decision.)

In the case of legal representation, I’m also familiar with how that works since I have many family members that are lawyers. Even in cases of public defenders who are assigned clients, if there’s a true ideological issue at stake, a lawyer can ask to be recused. Every client is supposed to get the best defense possible and it’s debatable if a lawyer can truly aid a client they hate. I know that within my own family, nobody would ever take on a client like Roof. Perhaps other lawyers are more accommodating, but again, why should a Jewish lawyer be put in such a difficult position when a non-Jewish lawyer could assist?

In almost every case, a Jewish professional should not participate in helping an anti-Semite. Probably the only instance where one may have to do it would involve a life-or-death situation—emergency room doctor, paramedic, police office, etc. Otherwise, I say no and I would encourage others to do the same.

Hanukkah Party Savings at Dollar Tree

I was compensated for this post. It contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking them.

Planning parties is fun… paying for them certainly is not!  Whenever possible, I try to save money by looking for bargains, especially on disposable items. Since everything at Dollar Tree is so affordable, I’m picking up lots of supplies for Hanukkah. (Yes, I’m about 6 weeks early, but for me, planning way in advance cuts down on chaos.)

One of the coolest features of Dollar Tree is that you can search by color. I found tons of bold blue items like dinner plates, dessert plates, napkins, cups, plastic utensils, crepe paper streamers, and plastic table covers.

For an accent color, silver is perfect. I love pairing silver confetti with blue bags to make a nice goodie bag for all my guests to take home. Everyone seems to love the mix of candy, fresh fruit, and a mini candle. Add some silver balloons and the holiday mood is complete.

Since the cost is much less than a Big Box store and I can order online, that ensures a lovely celebration with a minimum of fuss for this tired hostess.

Find just the right items for your party at Dollar Tree.

Free Curbside Clothing Recycling

Did you know the average person throws away 68 pounds of clothing per year? Even worse, 85% of that doesn’t get recycled or donated and ends up in the garbage! A lot of the time, we just get bored with clothing, even if it’s still perfectly good and there’s no need to toss it.

Simple Recycling is offering free curbside bags to anyone living in CT, IL, MA, MI, MN, OH and TX.

This is an excellent way to help out, no hassle required! I’d love to see this program expanded to all 50 states. Yes, there are Goodwill stores and other thrift shops around the country, but not everyone will make the effort. Being able to put it with regular trash is a lot easier.

Halloween Happenings

Since there were a ton of places giving out freebies for Halloween, with many in close proximity, this was a really fun day around here.

First up was Chipotle, where we got “Booritos” for $3.00 each. The promo specified everyone should come in costume. The kids did, I didn’t, but they were still nice enough to offer me the promo fee. I have to say that I am burrito obsessed and these definitely satisfied! My only issue is that there’s never enough guac.

Since IHOP is also in the same shopping plaza by the mall, we went there for dessert afterwards. Kids 12 and under received a free “spooky looking” pancake. No costumes required here, but lots of folks were dressed in a very festive way. According to IHOP’s website, the pancakes should’ve resembled these:

Not sure why, but our location had run out of candy corn, so it was pretty much a regular pancake with a fruit face. The taste was fine and the cost, of course, was zero, so no complaints regardless.

By that point, we were pretty full and after stopping to do a few random errands (bank, post office, etc.), I called my sister in Florida to wish her family a Happy Halloween. She was rushing off to a party, while we were headed home for a quiet evening. The tradition in New England is to Trick or Treat the night before Halloween. I’m not sure how or why this started, but it’s been that way for as long as I can remember. I actually like it better because we can enjoy the actual day as a family while the night before the kids have a fun time with friends.

How are you celebrating Halloween?
