Super Savings Saturday – 7/15/17

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday.

Rite Aid was the place to be this week for amazing deals on oral care and cookies (funny how those two are both on sale simultaneously, I know). I went shopping on Friday, in between a haircut and a Starbucks run. Because I had enough store rewards to cover everything, my entire purchase was free!

Rite Aid:

2 Colgate Total toothpastes, sale price $3.50. I stacked 2 $3.00 store coupons with 2 $0.50 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: Free!

1 Oral-B Glide floss, sale price $4.00. I used a $1.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $3.00 plus $3.00 Plenti Points!

2 Crest Pro-health toothpastes, sale price $4.00. I used 2 $2.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $4.00 plus $6.00 Plenti Points!

1 Oral-B toothbrush, sale price $4.00. I used a $1.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $3.00 plus $3.00 Plenti Points!

1 Tummy Zen heartburn relief, sale price $5.00. I used a $2.50 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $2.50 plus $2.50 Plenti Points! (This is a new product and I’m curious to see if it can help my man. He has the world’s worst heartburn on a daily basis and has tried pretty much everything.)

2 Enjoy Life Cookies, sale price $3.29. I used 2 $3.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $0.29 each with a $1.00 Checkout 51 Rebate! (The Chocolate Chip variety was pretty tasty, but I doubt that I’d pay full price.)

Overall, it was a great shopping trip, but I did have an issue with digital coupons. Rite Aid calls them “Load to Card,” and 100 out of 100 times, they malfunction. Because everything was free after points, I didn’t stress out, but it’s frustrating regardless.

Have you used any coupons lately?

Jewish Comedian Michelle Slonim Discusses Her Craft

Jewish girls have a reputation for being funny, but can it translate into an actual career? The hilarious comedian Michelle Slonim is not only doing it, but doing it exceptionally well! Her standup shows are always in demand and she has created her own business, Drawing Room Entertainment. Michelle was kind enough to share her story in the following guest post.

It all started with a visit to my therapist, when I had the thought: “Oh my god, I’m going to die alone.” While I was reminded not to get sucked into strictly black or white thinking, the idea persisted.

Like most Jewish girls, I wanted to meet a nice Jewish lawyer, so I did the most logical thing: I hosted Jewish singles parties in NYC. It was called “Date My Jewish Friend” and the idea was to bring a friend of the opposite gender and put them out there. (Sure, I was too busy running around these parties to actually meet anyone, but being pragmatic is overrated…)

I hosted them at dive bars, synagogues, comedy clubs, even at Webster Hall. Guess what: I didn’t land one date from these parties. The best story was a guy and a girl who met, dated, and moved in together. Sounds like a fairy tale, right? Too bad they eventually broke up when he came out of the closet!

Because my background has always been in entertainment, I would infuse something theatrical at the events—whether they were interactive actors sprinkled into the party atmosphere or me just getting up there and MCing to kick things off. My MCing skills, however, left much to be desired. What I learned was to be successful as an MC, you also need to be a comedian, which led to taking standup comedy classes.

My producing of “Date My Jewish Friend” eventually morphed into “Meet Drink Laugh,” which maintained some of the meeting portion, but was focused on standup comedy. Eventually, I stopped “Meet Drink Laugh” because I wanted to focus solely on standup comedy. I practiced as often as I could and took more classes, until I felt ready to branch out again with another venture, Drawing Room Entertainment (DRE).

Drawing Room is a 16th century term for the room you would withdraw to after dinner for entertainment, cigars or political conversations. It’s a little pretentious and not so transparent to understand, but I was vacillating between DRE and Comedy Salon. (I decided to go with the former in case it gets big; then, I could branch out into providing catering or live music.)

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; as of now it’s just comedy in a living room. I am hosting one with the Wandering Jews of Astoria on Friday, 7/14/17. It’s a potluck Shabbat so if you’re willing to shlep to Astoria, Queens with a kugel in hand, you’re invited!  signup here via One Table

Starbucks: Free Teavana on 7/14/17

On 7/14/17, Starbucks is hosting a “Free Tea Friday” event. Between 1:00-2:00 pm, they will be giving out samples of Teavana Shaken Iced Tea Infusions.

According to their website, the Infusion is “freshly steeped fruit and botanical blends, slightly sweetened, then shaken with the finest teas.” (Sounds pretty good, right?)

My Favorite Grilled Chicken Recipe

In an effort to keep the kitchen cool, I haven’t used the stove or oven in over a week now. No, we’re not subsisting on cold food or takeout pizza—we’ve been grilling.

It’s been a lot of variety, too, everything from burgers and hotdogs, to steaks, to salmon, but mostly we’ve eaten a lot of chicken. When making chicken in the oven, I prefer bone-in; on the grill, boneless is a lot quicker and easier to handle.

Here is my favorite new-ish recipe for flavorful grilled chicken:

    • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, well trimmed
    • 1/2 cup soy sauce
    • 1/2 cup lemon juice
    • 1 clove garlic, smashed
    • 1/2 Tsp. ground ginger
    • 1 Tsp. black pepper

Combine all of the ingredients in a large Ziploc, making sure chicken is well coated. Let marinate overnight. Cook chicken on a preheated, oiled grill for 8-10 minutes per side.

Because every grill seems to heat a bit differently, the cooking time is approximate. (Normally, I cut into a single piece and check to make sure it’s finished.)

I find this chicken pairs exceptionally well with potato salad and a green salad, but feel free to vary the sides. Cornbread is another good addition for heartier appetites.

Do you have a delicious recipe for the grill? I’d love to try it!
