The Dark Side of the Super Bowl

Strange but true: People are 10 times more likely to choke on food during holidays and national events. The Super Bowl, in particular, can be a dangerous time because of all the snack food consumed (pretzels, chips, nuts, and wings pose the greatest danger).

Since most folks will be enjoying the big game tonight and eating ungodly amounts of crunchy, sloppy, salty snacks, please be careful. Children and hubbies should be watched like a hawk and usually need a gentle reminder to chew and swallow slowly and fully between bites.

Of course, if you’re anything like me, the Super Bowl is nothing compared to the Kitten Bowl! (Just Saying…)

Tu B’Shevat Fruit Tree

I have seen many gorgeous fruit and nut platters created for Tu B’Shevat celebrations, but this tree, constructed entirely of fruit, is breathtaking! Aside from the time it would take to cut everything into pieces, it’s not complicated at all, and looks so striking on a bright white plate. Just Lovely and very inspiring to me!

Super Savings Saturday – 2/4/17

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday.

This week was all about health and beauty products with a few cheap home décor items tossed into the mix. I was hoping to find more items at the Target clearance event, but there is so little I need. (Maybe I’m too picky? Or just too cheap?)

Target:

2 Garnier Fructis conditioners, clearance price $1.48. I used 2 $2.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: Free! (The coupons beeped due to overage and had to be put in manually.)

2 Room Essentials curtains, clearance price $6.98. Total: $13.96! (Bought to replace some paper-thin, decade-old, raggedy curtains in the guest room. Much better now.)

CVS:

Colgate Total toothpaste, sale price $3.00. I stacked a $0.50 manufacturer’s coupon with a $2.50 store coupon. Total: Free!

Rite Aid:

2 packs of Daylogic razor cartridges, sale price $8.00. Total: $16.00 plus $16.00 Plenti Points!

Jewish Disability Awareness & Inclusion Month

Did you know February is Jewish Disability Awareness & Inclusion Month? Established in 2009, the goal is to raise awareness and foster inclusion of people with disabilities so they can fully engage in every facet of Jewish life.

Chabad has wonderful participation ideas that we can try:

  • Host an Inclusion Day at your temple or community center
  • Arrange for an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter to be at your next event
  • Ensure that people who use wheelchairs, walkers, and canes can access the bimah
  • Acquire at least one large-print siddur and one Braille siddur
  • Install written and Braille signage
  • Learn and teach your community how to sign six phrases in ASL
  • Invite a person with a disability to speak to your community
  • Invite people with disabilities to participate in the preparation for kiddush and meal functions
  • Extend personal invitations to people who may be on the margins of society
  • Invite people from group homes or your local Jewish program for adults with disabilities to services

My favorite tip? Promote inclusion by using social media with hashtags #JDAIM17 and #JUSTASK (can be done even if you’re totally unaffiliated). We need to remember that people with disabilities are handi-capable, not handicapped! Let’s make our communities warm and welcoming to everyone.
