According to an article from Tablet, Jewish bread is experiencing a renaissance. Extremely interesting and the photos are mouth watering! Definitely worth a read if you love to bake.

Rosh Hashanah Checklist

Need help prepping for Rosh Hashanah? Aish has some fabulous resources. Their comprehensive guide details everything you ever wanted to know about the holiday—tips for the festive meal (including symbolic foods), prayers, customs, Shofar, Tashlich, etc.

I also love this handy infographic.

Great refresher course for us old timers and very helpful for those who are unfamiliar with the Jewish New Year celebration.

Lessons Learned from Mode Media Collapse

mode-0

The biggest news in the blogging world currently is the collapse of Mode Media. What was supposed to be a stable company that provided many with a steady source of income shut down abruptly, without any warning, leaving tons of folks unpaid.

For the record, I don’t use Mode and they don’t owe me anything. Why then am I concerned? Because I have some blogging friends that are personally involved. Because this could have a domino effect. Because this is a wake up call for all bloggers.

When a blogger contracts with a company for a sponsored post or an ad campaign, there is supposed to be a level of trust involved: the blogger will fulfill their obligation and the company will pay the amount promised and on time. Like any other type of freelancing, there can be a large lag involved (120 days is not unheard of).

Every blogger has at least one horror story; those of us who have blogged for years typically have many. I have had experiences that range from simply annoying (many partial and/or late payments) to truly awful (never paid at all, giveaway prizes never shipped that I had to replace, etc).

While nobody wants to be lied to, used, or worked without compensation, it unfortunately does happen. This is a risk that every blogger takes. The majority of the time, everything turns out ok in the end. But when it doesn’t, particularly for those who are counting on promised money to pay their bills, it can be devastating.

There are so many perks to blogging—making my own schedule, interacting with incredible readers, and getting to work with amazing individuals and companies. I’ve always said that even if I didn’t make a dollar from my efforts, I’d keep blogging because I truly love it. For me, any financial rewards that come from TJL are a bonus, not my motivation.

Those of us who are self-employed should never get complacent. Income can dry up without a moment’s notice. Traffic can disappear overnight. There are no guarantees. The best thing to do is diversify, so if one source goes away, there are others to hold us over until it can be replaced. And, most of all, we have to save money for expenses, taxes, and a rainy day because eventually it happens to everyone.

Should Mode make good on their promises? Of course. Will it happen? Doubtful…

Were you effect by Mode’s collapse? Maybe you’ve been in a similar situation? What advice would you give someone else?

High Holiday Outfits – What Are You Wearing?

High Holidays will be here in a little over two weeks! Can you believe it? I’m preparing by planning our annual festivities, tweaking my menus, and searching for the perfect outfit!

Seriously, would it be a holiday without new clothes? Not for me. I literally get giddy with excitement/anticipation every new year, trying to top whatever dress I wore the year before. Plus, my temple, like most others, is a total fashion parade and I do want to look as good as the other ladies.

In the past, I have spent hundreds of dollars on special occasion clothes. Inevitably, they would be worn once and then sit in the back of the closet forever. Not only was this expensive, it also made me feel guilty for being wasteful and extravagant. Sure, I could wear something I already own, but that’s no fun.

After I tried clothing rentals, everything changed. Now, I can get something new, wear it for a day, send it back, and do it all over again. Rent the Runway, my personal favorite, has so many dresses available, it’s actually hard to choose. If I had to sort through everything, it would be impossible, so I filter, starting with Daytime dresses and hem/sleeve length. By doing this, I can find something that’s modest enough for temple, but still looks fantastic.

Out of the 148 dresses available, based on my search criteria, I narrowed it down to 2, one for Rosh Hashanah and one for Yom Kippur.

Pink Print Julian Two Wrap Dress – Diane von Furstenberg

This one has everything I want—3/4 sleeves, long enough but not frumpy, bright color, and a generous fit so I can eat lots of goodies! I love anything pink, especially for a party. Nude pumps and dangling earrings will be my accessories.

Deep Blue Trina Dress – ST by Olcay Gulsen

Since Yom Kippur is more solemn, I chose a muted color (navy). Similar sleeve/hem as the other dress, plainer but still fitted. I have a nice double strand of long white pearls that should compliment it perfectly and a pair of navy pumps.

To avoid catastrophe, Rent the Runway provides the option to select a 2nd size dress for FREE! (How is awesome is that?) I do read the suggestions in the fit guide, but we all know nothing is guaranteed. Having a backup is so worth it.

And that’s my plan. Quick, easy, done, and less than $100.00 total! No try-on, no parking nightmares. No wonder why I love online shopping.

What are you wearing for High Holidays? Something old or new? I’d love to hear about it!
