A Fabulous Gift at My Door

1530_375-deluxe-dried-fruit-tray

Imagine opening your front door and finding a huge box that contained this dried fruit assortment! Yes, I am still surprised that I received such an amazing gift. I love food gifts, especially fancy ones like this Harry & David delight—something I’d never buy for myself. It has the yummiest dried fruit I’ve ever tasted (pears, white peaches, dates, red plums, and apricots.) Best of all, it arrived just in time for our Tu B’Shevat Seder.

I feel so blessed that someone cared enough about me to brighten my holiday and my home, especially since the friend who sent it isn’t even Jewish and I didn’t think they even knew it was a holiday for me. Good friends truly are worth their weight in gold!

Super Savings Saturday – 1/23/16

PURINA-ONE-0111

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

This was a chaotic week, so I only focused on a few good deals for beauty products and much needed pet food. In addition to these goodies, I picked up some fresh produce, bread, and a bunch of stuff for the predicted snowstorm.

PetSmart:

2 Purina One dog food, regular price $7.99 plus BOGO. I used 2 $3.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $5.98 for 2! (If the coupon resets before the end of the month, I’ll redo this deal since it’s so cheap.)

Gillette-Venus-670x355

Rite Aid:

4 Gillette razors, on sale $7.99. I used 4 $2.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $23.96, plus $20.00 Plenti Points! (Only $0.99/pack after store bucks are deducted.)

CVS:

This was a special request from a friend who doesn’t coupon and will only use Pantene products. I was happy to pass along the savings and the shampoo to her.

2 Pantene Repair & Protect shampoos, on sale 2/$8.00. I used a $4.00/2 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $4.00 plus $4.00 ECB!

Make Money as a Mystery Shopper

thRRA4SIBM

Mystery Shopping—sometimes also called Secret Shopping—sounds too good to be true: Shop or dine at your favorite places and get paid for it. While there are some scams connected to the industry, it really can be a legitimate source of extra income for the right person. I know this because I’ve been doing it for the past ten years.

Who is the ideal mystery shopper? Someone who is extremely detailed, follows directions to the letter, and can work independently. Most companies have very specific instructions about the assignment (date, time, how many people, etc). Receipts must be kept and feedback must be done correctly and in the time allotted if you wish to be paid. Failure to do so will result in big disappointment and no money!

Most shoppers start on a probation status and can sign up for one shop at a time. As you rise in the ranks, you’ll be eligible for multiple shops and premium shops (things like cruises). Those who live in metro areas will obviously have more to choose from, but I live in the Suburbs and still find plenty.

Here are some of the shops I’ve done:

  • Car dealerships
  • Pet store
  • Restaurants (fast food & fine dining)
  • Movie theatres
  • Bowling alley
  • Cell phone store
  • Salon
  • Hotel
  • Clothing store
  • Gas station
  • Cable companies

I have been offered a lot more jobs than these, but I am particular about what I accept. I will not take a job that is low-paying, overly complicated, or far away. I usually make around $15/hour, plus reimbursements. For me, it’s always been just a casual hobby, but one lady claimed she made $14,000 a year doing it full-time.

To get started with Mystery Shopping, you have to apply for each individual company you want to work with. Yes, this takes tons of effort, but can be worth it in the long run if you plan to shop often. Volition has an enormous list available on their website.

How can you tell if a company is legit? Check to see if they’re a member of the MSPA. It’s the official organization that oversees all the companies. Also know that you never have to pay upfront to mystery shop: no joining fee, application fee, etc!

Typically, you’ll be paid through PayPal or a check and the turnaround time is 30-90 days (usually less, but that’s the longest I’ve waited). Since you’re working as an Independent Contractor, you’ll be responsible for paying your own taxes. It’s very important to keep track of your expenses! I use FreshBooks and it works wonderfully.

Overall, I think Mystery Shopping is a fair payout based on your time and expertise, but don’t expect to make a fortune.

Have you tried Mystery Shopping? I’d love to hear about it.

Fun Ways to Celebrate Tu B’Shevat

Tu B'Shevat Seder Collage

Will you be observing Tu B’Shevat this weekend? For those who aren’t familiar with this minor holiday, Tu B’Shevat is the Jewish New Year for Trees (similar to Arbor Day). Like Passover, it is celebrated with a festive Seder but this meal focuses on fresh and dried fruits, nuts, and seeds. Widely known and observed in Israel, here in America it’s not as popular (but I think it should be!)

Here are some fun ideas to make it extra special:

  • If you live in a warm climate, planting a tree together as a family can be a nice activity or give small gifts of gardening seeds that can be enjoyed later.
  • Create a family “tree” and teach the kids about your heritage.
  • Print pictures of nature scenes and create a banner.
  • Chana’s Art Room has directions to make an adorable mini terrarium.
