You’re Never to Old for a Bar Mitzvah

a3

James Franco has proven you’re never too old for a Bar Mitzvah. Earlier this month, the actor celebrated his own at age 37—24 years later than usual!

While some are dismissing it as publicity stunt, I think it’s most likely a sincere gesture of faith and I can’t applaud it strongly enough. Since popular opinion is greatly influenced by Hollywood, this will definitely raise awareness about the option of adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah and may encourage others to have their own belated ceremony.

Just because most boys and girls do it at 12 and 13 doesn’t mean it’s wasted on the middle-aged (on the contrary, in all actuality!). Those of us who grew up in a Jewish household take the concept of Bar/Bat Mitzvah for granted, but there are many reasons why someone may not have had one in their youth: lack of affiliation, lack of funds, lack of interest, being the child of an Interfaith couple, etc.

Many people seek out religion as they age. Once we develop our own ideas on spirituality, what seemed insignificant years earlier can become very relevant and the longing for a ceremony and what it represents becomes important. Knowing that Bar/Bat Mitzvah is available to you can mean a world of difference for a Jew by birth or a Jew by choice.

Just as we’re never too old to learn to read, or swim, or drive, we are never too old to find spiritual fulfillment. I’ve often said that the Jewish community is not doing enough when it comes to outreach. Unfortunately, many members are judgmental and want things to be done “as they always have been done.” That argument has gotten us nowhere and could very possibly  hurt future growth.

What we need to do is foster a sense of openness, inclusion, and personal freedom. Nobody should ever be discouraged from a Bar/Bat Mitzvah because of age! Because no matter how young or old an individual is, their special moment is a joyful event and should be celebrated by all.

Do you support Bar/Bat Mitzvah for an adult?

Super Savings Saturday – 10/17/15

1017151142

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

This week was all about the shampoo. On 10/11, I headed out to CVS, hoping to score a bunch before the coupons expired that day. I arrived at 7:47 AM, and only 5 bottles were left (thanks, shelf-clearers!). Luckily, I was able to get what I needed and wasn’t shut out of the deal. I swear if I don’t shop when the doors open on Sunday mornings, it’s nothing but rainchecks.

I also stocked up on free whitening toothpaste, panty liners, and cheap veggies.

CVS:

4 Tresemme shampoos, on sale $4.00. I used 2 $5.00/2 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $6.00 with $5.00 ECBs! (After store bucks, each bottle was only $0.25! Such a good deal for these huge bottles that last forever!)

Rite Aid:

2 Crest 3D toothpaste, on sale $3.00. I used 2 $0.75 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $4.50, plus $6.00 Plenti Points. (I paid with points, so my purchase was not only free, but a moneymaker!)

Shaws:

8 Green Giant frozen broccoli, on sale $0.88. I used 2 $0.80 manufacturer’s coupons (doubled). Total: $0.48 each! (Good to have on hand in the freezer for busy nights or bad ad weeks when fresh produce is overpriced.)

Target:

Kotex liners, regular price $2.99. I used a $2.00 manufacturer’s coupon, stacked with a $1.50 target mobile coupon. Total: Free! (I had other items, so it went through with slight overage. Always a good idea to use a filler in these situations.)

Feel free to share/link your deals in the comments.

My Experience with Younique Cosmetics

a3

Recently, I had the opportunity to review Younique cosmetics. Younique is a revolutionary beauty brand that was created in 2012 by a brother & sister team. They offer a diverse collection of face, lip and eye makeup as well as skincare products and cosmetics tools.

Younique’s mission is to uplift, empower, validate, and ultimately build self-esteem in women around the world through high-quality products that encourage both inner and outer beauty while also providing opportunities for personal growth and financial reward. This is accomplished by using a direct sales model where each consultant can create her own business.

They are very active on social media and I’ve seen/heard many positive things about Younique. I am not a consultant and I can’t speak about that side of the company. I can, however, discuss what their products are like for the consumer, and I must say I loved them! These are the ones I tried:

o Moodstruck Precision Pencil Eye Liners
o Stiff Upper Lip Stains
o Refreshed Rose Water
o Moodstruck Addiction Shadow Palettes

Moodstruck Addiction Shadow Palettes

Younique makes 3 different eye palettes; I tried both Palette One (more golden) and Palette Two (more silver). Each contains 7 color coordinated shadows that can be used alone or combined for a custom look. Each shade is both blendable and buildable and I liked that there were many different finishes from matte to shimmery. For brown eyes like mine, Palette Two is awesome!

Moodstruck Precision Pencil Eye Liners

Anyone looking for long-wearing products will love them. The eyeliners not only look gorgeous, they also are water-proof and smudge-proof. I tried shades Perfect (gray), Passionate (purple)and Prim (brown). The gray/brown shades are wonderful for daily use and I love the purple for evenings.

Stiff Upper Lip Stains

The lip stains glide on easily and provide full coverage, all-day color in a matte finish. I tried 3 shades—Sultry (magenta), Shy (soft pink), and Savvy (deep plum). Shy is my favorite and I like to let it dry completely, then top it with some clear gloss or lip balm.

Refreshed Rose Water

While this product is primarily a skin revitalizer, I found it be very unique with multiple uses—toner, setting spray, primer, makeup remover, and hair softener. The scent is sweet without being too sugary and doesn’t irritate at all.

I found all of the Younique products I tried to be excellent. The colors were pretty and the formulas had good pigment and staying power. Everything is vegan friendly, cruelty free, and doesn’t contain the most commonly irritating preservatives like parabens, sulfates, and fragrance. They are a good value for the money—-especially the eye palettes!—and I would purchase them on my own.
