My Top 10 Time Management Tips

a3

Are you struggling to find more hours in the day? Here are 10 time management tips that have revolutionized my life.

1. Turn off the TV

Most of us watch many hours daily, so television/movies take a big chunk of time away from more productive activities. If you’re struggling with a lack of time and the black box is on a lot in your home, try cutting back, setting a viewing schedule, or even moving it to another room. (Because I’m a total TV addict, this is the hardest for me, but helps most.)

2. Have a consistent routine

Having a written down “time budget” helps tremendously. I don’t currently have a strict schedule, nor do I advocate one because it’s pretty much impossible to follow, but I do like having a consistent routine. Writing it down and crossing it off as I accomplish each thing helps me to stay on track and be more efficient. It’s the difference between wishing I could do yoga everyday and actually doing it. More often than not, many of the things I hope to accomplish in a day actually get done when it’s written out in front of me, rather than in my head. Without a written routine, I’m much more easily distracted which, in turn, means I am much less productive.

3. Write a daily to-do list

Combined with a routine, this helps enormously for staying on time. I rarely get everything done on my to-do list, but it gives me an attainable goal to work towards. Anything that doesn’t get done is simply moved to another day.

4. Eliminate clutter

The less stuff you have, the less time it takes to keep up with. If you don’t love it, use it on a regular basis, or can easily live without it, get rid of it. There’s no point in having junk sitting around your home, taking up space, and needing storing and dusting.

5. Stay home more

What a novel idea! It really works, I tell you. I love being home and have found that carefully guarding my outside activities and engagements really helps me be more efficient and less frazzled. This time not only save time, it also saves money.

6. Have dinner planned/prepared before lunch time

This makes a world of difference at our house. I have a 30 minute time block in the morning to plan/prep/prepare dinner. We usually stick to simple meals around here and most of them can be made in 20 minutes or less. If I wait until dinnertime, I’m usually too tired and/or hungry and we’ll end up going out to eat.

To streamline dinner prep, I like to bulk cook and have most items on hand. Many times, I just pick a protein, starch, and veggie and call that a meal. Another good idea is to use the crockpot if you work outside the home. Dinner doesn’t always have to be an elaborate feast, you know.

Another benefit to making dinner earlier is that the dishes aren’t waiting for me late at night.

7. Stay off the phone

For me, the phone can easily be a huge time-waster, not just talk but also text. Don’t be afraid to use the answering machine and caller ID to screen calls during the day. True emergencies are rare and most people just want to gossip. Also, I try to conduct as much communication through email that I can since it’s quicker.

8. Use the timer

When I’m feeling down or exhausted, I set the timer for 10 minutes as a motivator. What seemed like a monumental task can be broken down into bite-sized pieces that are easily accomplished.

9. Take care of yourself

Getting enough sleep, exercising, eating well, drinking plenty of water—these things all add up to better health and more productivity. If I’m tired, I’m less productive. If I’m sick, nothing goes well. As women, we tend to be caregivers to everyone except ourselves. This has to change!

10. Have a day of rest every week

God knew what He was doing when He implemented this from the beginning of time! It really does make a huge difference to have one day in seven be set aside for refreshing your spirit.

When a Rabbi Breaks the Law

a3

On any given day, Orthodox women around the world visit the mikvah, in search of spiritual purification. None would ever imagine that their most private moments in a ritual bath would be spied upon and videotaped, yet over 150 women were victims of this despicable crime.

Such a crime is disturbing under normal circumstances, but when the predator turns out to be an Orthodox Rabbi, it’s truly unreal.

Rabbi Barry Freundel, former leader of Kesher Israel Congregation and a former advisor to Senator Joe Lieberman, was sentenced yesterday to 6 1/2 years in prison for his perverted behavior. Because the 3-year statue of limitations had expired for many of the victims, he is only serving time for 52 victims and the punishment equates to roughly 6 weeks per victim.

Frankly, that is disgusting. How many weeks, months, even years of terror will these women suffer from? I can guarantee it’s more than 6 weeks! For some, it may last a lifetime. Not only have they lost their trust in humanity, many have lost their faith, too.

To further complicate things, some of the victims were converts to Judaism, who were totally unfamiliar with customs and rituals and would’ve followed anything the Rabbi instructed them to do.

As a community, we tend to hero worship our Rabbis (I will readily admit that I’ve done this at times). While the overwhelming majority of Rabbis are caring, helpful, and of the highest integrity, they are still just people. And as we all know, people are not perfect. I wonder how many individuals suspected Rabbi Freundel was up to no good and made excuses or pretended it wasn’t happening. Thankfully, one brave lady who was a mikvah attendant, came forward and reported him.

In the Reform community, nobody visits the mikvah, so I have no personal experience with the practice. I have respect for any woman that chooses to go, but I’ve never felt it was needed. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the practice, I’m sure every woman would agree that the practice should never be violated.

The Orthodox world, which is very slow to change and resistant to modern concepts, has been devastated by this crime. Many are now calling for female leadership and more transparency—both of which I fully support.

We should always remember that predators come in every shape, size, religion, and color. Nobody is above suspicion and public safety must be protected at all costs. Blind faith should only be put in God, never Man.

To every victim of Rabbi Freundel, I would say how sorry I am for such unimaginable suffering and I would encourage them to hate the man, not the religion. Don’t let one horrible person separate you from Judaism and the Jewish community. The community cares about you, God cares about you, and you are not alone.

Anyone is welcome to share personal experiences of a Rabbi abusing their power. Because of the sensitive nature, anonymous comments are fine.

Super Savings Saturday – 5/16/15

 a2

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday.

This week was full of many freebies and deals, both from shopping my regular route plus a few new stores I’d never been to before. (Visiting somewhere new always gives me the needed motivation and energy to continue couponing, which can honestly be a chore at times.)

My favorite deals were free laundry detergent, free soap, and $0.88 chicken.

Walmart:

Purex detergent, regular price $3.99 with a $3.99 Try me Free rebate. Total: Free!

CeraVe face soap, regular price $4.97. I used a $6.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: Free!

Hidden Valley Ranch dip, details here. Total: Free after rebate!

Shaws:

2 Marzetti salad dressings, on sale $2.50. I used 2 $0.75 manufacturer’s coupons (doubled). Total: $1.00 each!

1 package chicken legs and 1 package chicken thighs, BOGO plus $3.00 mark down coupons on each. Total: $0.88!   (What an incredible find! I didn’t know if both deals would go thru but it worked perfectly. I’m not crazy about dark meat, but I was super excited to score 4lbs of meat for less than $1.00!)

Children’s Orchard:

This is an upscale resale store for children and babies where you can buy and sell any items that are in good condition. Not only does it have clothes, there were also plenty of toys, furniture, and other kid-friendly items available. By joining the M.O.M.S Club, I received a $5.00 cache card, good on anything in the store.

I bought a 3-piece Carter’s infant set. Since it was only $4.99, I paid nothing!

BJ’s Wholesale Club:

After receiving a free 60-day membership offer in the mail, I was willing to give the wholesale club another chance. It’s been a loooooong time since I’ve set foot one of these and it was better than I remembered with much more variety. I walked the entire store to get a good lay of the land and compare prices. I liked the food/drinks and some of the clothes and books. I’m not, however, crazy about the cost. Because I shop deals and loss leaders, none of the food was cheaper than what I currently have access to, and there’s a $40 membership charge added on before anything is purchased. After running the numbers, I don’t think it’s worth it for me, but I did have fun shopping.

I purchased a beautiful scarf that was half price, $5.99, and I’ve already worn it twice this week.

What did you buy this week? Feel free to comment and link up!
