Books I Love – White Mischief

a1

If you’re looking for a good beach read or plane/car trip entertainment this summer, take a look at White Mischief, written by James Fox.

White Mischief is a fascinating tale of Colonial Kenya in the early 1940’s. It’s a non-fiction book that reads like a mystery novel. The book centers on a group of British Aristocrats and their wild enclave, called “Happy Valley.” One of its prized residents, Lord Erroll, is murdered. The resulting investigation uncovers the hidden realities in Happy Valley: Alcoholism, Adultery, Drugs, lavish spending, Wife-Swapping, and much more. While their fellow countrymen and women were at war, the idle rich partied without a care in the world.

The first part of White Mischief focuses on the trial of Lord Erroll’s accused killer, Lord Broughton. Lord Broughton was having an affair with the victim’s wife and his motive seemed apparent. The second part focuses on the investigation and evidence, including Fox’s extensive sleuthing. (He personally didn’t agree with the acquittal of Lord Broughton, and considered the trial spoiled by corruption and perjury.)

The unrelenting publicity took its toll on Happy Valley. Many of the residents met sudden and/or unfortunate ends. Lord Broughton committed suicide shortly after his stunning acquittal. Only Diana, Lady Delamere, was unscathed. Though her husband was murdered and her lover committed suicide, she went on to remarry the largest landowner in Kenya. At the time of her death, she was considered the most powerful white woman in Africa.

The trial, and resulting book, garnered worldwide attention. It was a fascination that never died and 46 years after the murder, it was turned into a Hollywood movie of the same title. The movie starred Greta Scacchi and Charles Dancer (who will be recognized by Games of Thrones fans). Both movie and book are fabulous, but the book is obviously more in depth.

White Mischief is out of print, but there are many used copies on Amazon and a Kindle edition is available.

Shaw’s is having a great sale which will make for some super cheap drinks, when combined with coupons.

Tropicana Twister, 59-oz container, on sale $1.00. Use a $0.50/2 Manufacturer’s coupon (doubled). Total: $0.50 each!  (This would make a great punch if you have any summer parties planned.)

Schweppes Ginger Ale, 12-pack, on sale $2.00. Use a $1.00 Manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $1.00!  (I haven’t seen soda this cheap in a very long time.)

The Tropicana deal is good all week, but the ginger ale is a 3-day sale, so shop before the weekend is over.

My Crummy 4th Of July

a1

Anyone else having some holiday blues today? Normally, I love the 4th of July and always look forward to it. Instead of the awesome holiday I expected, it’s been a disaster! Here is how my crummy 4th of July transpired:

* I woke up to an ant infestation in the kitchen. All of the counters were covered in little monsters! I spent 15 minutes spraying everything down with straight bleach and another hour coughing, sneezing, and wiping my itchy eyes.

* I decided to tackle a huge pile of laundry. (I haven’t been washing during the heat wave and it had built up into a mountain.) On the first load, the washer began thumping, pounding, and screeching beyond belief! Evidently, it’s not rinsing and everything came out sopping wet. Did I mention it was a load of towels

* Annoyed with the laundry and ant disasters, I tried out an eagerly-anticipated new recipe for Chicken with Apricot and Onions. Due to some extremely bitter apricots, it flopped royally! There went my special dish for the 4th…

* The 90-degree heat has broken, only to be replaced by wicked thunder and lighting storms. During the worst of it, Pumpkin decided to go outside to play. He returned covered in mud, shaking, and crying. Guess who had no clean towels to dry him with? Sigh

* We enjoy going to the annual fireworks show. Due to the storms, it has been canceled.

So, here I am, at 2:00 in the afternoon, during which is supposed to be my vacation, having the world’s crummiest 4th of July! Oh well, there’s always next year…

I sincerely hope everyone else is enjoying a happy and healthy 4th!

Chicken And Veggie Skillet

a1

As the heat wave drags on here in New England, I’m continuing to look for dishes that don’t require an oven. Chicken and Veggie Skillet does use the stove, but that doesn’t seem to heat up the house as much. I love Chicken and Veggie skillets, because it’s a dish that’s flavorful, healthy, and uses ingredients I have on hand.

To make a Chicken and Veggie Skillet, you will need:

*  2 Chicken breasts, shredded. (I used meat leftover from a store-bought rotisserie.)

*  2 Zucchinis, diced.

*  1 Package cherry tomatoes

*  1 TSP garlic

*   Juice of a lemon

*  1 TBP oil

*  1/2 Cup Chicken broth

*  3 TBP of Smart Balance

*  Cooked pasta (I used 8-oz of spaghetti.)

*  Salt/Pepper/Red Pepper flakes

Start by sautéing the garlic in the oil and lemon juice. Add the tomatoes and the chicken broth. Cook approximately 10 minutes until the tomatoes burst and start to break down. Add in the zucchini and cook until crisp-tender. Mix with the cooked pasta and shredded chicken. Stir in the Smart Balance, making sure everything is well-coated. Add salt/pepper to taste. A bit of red pepper flakes provides a nice kick.

If you’d like to make this dish lighter, or low-carb, simply eliminate the pasta. It’s still tasty without it. I served this Chicken and Veggie skillet with a green salad and slices of watermelon on the side. Delish!
