Super Savings Saturday – 1/27/18

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday.

I’m making a major effort to sort through the house, top to bottom, and purge stuff we don’t need. Since we’d like to move in the near future, this project is very high on my list, but so overwhelming. 1-2 hour chunks of time is about all I can stand, but even short bursts have been very constructive.

Used Book Store:

I brought in 6 bags of books. This store is pretty picky and only wanted a fraction. I received $39.49 and donated the rest to the library. While this isn’t a savings for me, it will be for the next buyer and it’s good to pass on the savings when we can.

Walgreens:

2 White Cloud toilet papers, sale price $3.99. I used 2 $3.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $1.98!

Walmart:

4 Rimmel eye shadows, details here. Total: Free!

4 oranges, regular price $0.50 each! Total: $2.00 plus a $2.00 Coupons.com rebate!

1 dozen brown eggs, regular price $1.89. Total: $1.89 plus a $1.89 Coupons.com rebate!

Local Produce Store:

4 pineapples, sale price $0.99. Total: $3.96! (Two are gone; the other two waiting.)

4 limes, sale price $0.25 each. Total: $1.00!

Honeydew melon, sale price $1.49.

Clearance pack of random veggies – 1 green pepper, 1 red onion, 2 zucchini. Total: $0.89! (Other than one rotten spot on the pepper, it was all edible.)

A random pineapple tip from Pinterest: Instead of cutting into chunks, try making circular slices. I’m planning to make a fruit platter for Tu B’Shevat and the pineapple will be a great addition. I find so many pretty pictures/inspiration/recipes from Pinterest!

What have you done lately to save money?

Planting Trees for Tu B’Shevat

Although it’s a fairly minor holiday on the Jewish calendar, Tu B’Shevat is a lovely celebration of nature and definitely deserves more attention. Similar to Earth Day, it’s great for raising environmental awareness, and there is also a long tradition of planting trees in observance.

Because I live in a cold and snowy part of New England, planting a tree during the winter isn’t an option. Folks who lives in Florida or California can get to work right in their own backyard; for the rest of us, planting a tree in Israel is the best option.

A lot of companies do it, but the Jewish National Fund has arguably got the market cornered. Each tree costs only $18.00 and the buyer receives a personalized certificate similar to this sample.

Anything that helps to beautify and enrich the Holy Land is very important because it reinforces our commitment and connection—to the country, to the people, and to our culture. Jews outside of Israel sometimes forget that our Israeli brothers and sisters live in a state of perpetual war. Evil forces target them in physical, psychological, and financial ways that are breathtakingly cruel and wrong.

Let’s show our support and fill up Israel with trees!

Hijab-Wearing Model Fired by L’Oreal for Anti-Semitism

A controversial hijab-wearing blogger and model from the UK was hired—and now fired—by L’Oreal from an upcoming campaign.

Amena Khan, was forced to step down after vicious anti-Semitic tweets she made in 2014 surfaced. She now claims: “Championing diversity is one of my passions. I don’t discriminate against anyone.” (All lies!)

Her despicable views and pathetic apology aside, I find it incredibly odd that L’Oreal would feature someone wearing a head covering to sell hair care. The whole point of an ad is to showcase the product and hijabs make that impossible. You literally can’t see a single strand in the publicity picture above! Hiring her to represent their makeup line instead would’ve been too logical, I guess, even though the makeup is clearly visible.

I don’t know when this disconnection from reality first occurred, but it’s getting overwhelming. Europe has a huge problem on their hands with a radical Muslim minority trying force their will on the entire population. If someone wants to wear a hijab, that’s their right, but we shouldn’t pretend it’s normal behavior. There is nothing immodest or sinful about having beautiful hair and I refuse to cover mine.

Rather than pander, L’Oréal should use some common sense in the future. These types of publicity stunts always backfire.
