My Best Black Friday Tips

It’s not even Halloween, but I’m already thinking about Black Friday. (Is that weird?) For as long as I can remember, I have been a Black Friday enthusiast. When I was a much younger lady, I loved to hit the outlets for “Midnight Madness” to scour the racks for shoes, clothes, and purses.

While that was fun, it could also be expensive and I would only buy a few things. This all changed after I discovered couponing and deal hunting. Now, by combining sales, coupons, and rebates, I’m able to bring home tons and tons of goodies for mere pennies.

Naturally, this kind of shopping doesn’t just come together by accident; it’s not for the casual shopper. If you want the most stuff for the least money, some inconveniences will have to be endured—getting up super early, facing the crowds, enduring frustration, etc.

I prefer to start early, putting my lists together once the ads are leaked online. (Each store varies their release time so you have to regularly check. Usually, everything is leaked 2 or 3 weeks before the big day.) The info is posted on many sites, both retailers and blogs. I love Slick Deals because it’s the most comprehensive.

After my list is complete, I look through my stash of insert coupons and printables. Often, there will be ones that work into the deals and freebies can become moneymakers.

With detailed plan in hand, I’m ready to tackle the drugstores, going first thing Thursday morning when doors open at 7:00. (Technically, it’s supposed to be Friday, but lots of places open on Thanksgiving.)

I try to find everything that’s free after rebate, but there’s no guarantee. Sometimes items aren’t in stock, or another couponer beats me to it—even on Thanksgiving morning! Just do the best you can, and try to remember that it’s supposed to be fun.

Common sense things to remember, but worth noting:

  1. Get a good night’s sleep. If you’re overtired, it’s much harder to face a multiple-store coupon marathon.
  2. Eat breakfast and drink at least 1 large cup of coffee. You want to be full and focused.
  3. Keep a separate envelope for each store that contains a corresponding list and coupons so you won’t get confused.
  4. At the store, follow the rules. Take notice of limits and don’t use extra rewards cards. Ask an employee which register is set aside for those shoppers doing huge hauls. Try not to make a chaotic situation worse.
  5. Schedule breaks. Especially important if you’re doing multiple stores. Take a break in between. Go home if you live close by, or sit in the parking lot for a breather. I always pack bottled water, energy shots, and a snack.
  6. Don’t bring kids or significant others. I can’t stress this one enough. Unless your loved one is also an extreme couponer, they will either slow you down or beg you to leave. Shop alone for the best results.

After the drugstores, I head home to cook, watch the Macy’s parade, eat/socialize with family and try to take a nap. After that, it’s late afternoon already, which means it’s time to prepare for round 2 (mall shopping).

Yes, it’s a looooooong day. For me, however, it’s totally worth it. I couldn’t do it every week, but once a year is doable. And who doesn’t love free stuff?

Will you be shopping on Black Friday?

Super Savings Saturday – 10/12/19

After a long hiatus, I’m back to couponing. (Seriously, it feels like I haven’t done it in forever.) Even though I only went to two stores and spent only 20 minutes shopping, it was a lot of fun and reminded me what I’ve been missing. I stocked up on kitchen essentials, makeup and a CVS freebie.

Walgreens:

1st Transaction – 2 Revlon lip balms, sale price $4.99. I used a BOGO digital coupon. Total: $4.99 plus a $5.00 Register Reward.

2nd Transaction – Nice Ziploc bags, sale price $2.79 (Buy 1, Get 2 Free) and Seventh Generation dish soap, sale price $2.59. Total: $5.38. After Register Reward it was only $0.38.

CVS:

Hallmark “You’re on My Mind” card, regular price $2.00. I used a $2.00 store coupon. Total: Free.

My favorite deal was the Revlon. The balms are fruit scented/slightly flavored and feel extremely moist. The color goes on sheer. The Strawberry is lighter than the Cherry, but neither looked too dark. Definitely worth buying if they go on sale again.

Have you found any deals lately? Feel free to link or share in the comments.

Crazy Busy High Holiday Week

Ever since I hurt my hand earlier this summer, I’ve been struggling to stay organized. Despite months of healing, it’s still not 100%, with constant pain that limits my ability to get anything finished.

During a “normal” week, trying to keep up with cooking, cleaning, shopping, family life and blogging has been a challenge. Add in High Holiday prep and I’m really beyond my limits.

The thought of deep cleaning the house, intensive baking, finding everyone party clothes, new haircuts, trying to please relatives by accommodating their wishes/schedules—oh my, it’s just too much!

And, I’m embarrassed to admit that I also have a business trip scheduled for this week that I totally forgot about. (Booked back in April before the injury.) I’m supposed to leave on Friday, attend a 2-day conference, then grab a flight home on Sunday at 7:00AM, with Rosh Hashanah starting at sundown that evening. (Just insanity, I know.)

This was a reality check. I simply can not do what I usually do and I have to admit it, both to myself and others. I will not be cooking a holiday dinner. I will not be baking. The rest of the family will need to pick up the slack.

Yesterday, I paid Merry Maids for 6 hours of cleaning, and you know what, I don’t feel guilty. The dishes are done, the laundry is done, every inch of the house looks and smells clean. No more clutter. I honestly should’ve done it months ago. We can afford it, but I was being cheap and prideful.

I’m way past the age when playing Super Woman is appealing. We have to ask for help and delegate when needed. So what if the bakery is making the challah? Who cares if we eat a rotisserie chicken? It’s not the end of the world!

Very often in my mind, I have these fantasies of perfect holidays, with everyone happy, smiling, just the picture of domestic bliss. But it doesn’t happen in real life. Someone is usually sick with a cold. Another person is in a bad mood. Maybe we’re late to services or my in-laws complain that it’s not “how it was when I did it.”

Folks, you can’t give what you don’t have. This Rosh Hashanah, I don’t have the time or energy. Instead of trying to do it all, I’m letting someone else do it and that’s ok. There’s always next year; there’s always another holiday. I’d rather have a small celebration without making myself nuts rather than an elaborate feast.

5779 was not my most productive year. It was a year that I struggled in every single way – personally, professionally, emotionally, etc. I’m not sad to see it go. Instead, I’m focused on the future. Life is full of ups and downs. I pray that 5780 will be better, but no matter what happens, I have so much to be grateful for. I don’t want to miss the good stuff just because sometimes there’s bad stuff.

This week will be hard, no doubt about it. But I’m committed to keeping my attitude positive, staying calm and going with the flow. I’m not going to worry myself crazy, thinking of worst-case scenarios or beating myself up with guilt. I’m doing the best I can and that’s good enough for now.

To anyone else struggling with mommy guilt, please know you’re not alone. It’s hard for everyone. You are doing a good job, even if nobody acknowledges it. We should support and care for each other. Don’t blame and shame. Be a good friend. Offer to help another mom if you know she needs it. When it’s your turn, she’ll return the favor.

Readers Pick The Next Giveaway

It’s time for another giveaway and I’m opening the floor for suggestions. Whatever gets the most votes, wins.

In 2017 and 2018, I tried this option and it was a lot of fun. The top votes back then were for gift cards, kid stuff, food and beauty products. I’m guessing it will probably be the same now, but you guys sometimes surprise me.

So, feel free to throw out ideas. The only limitation is please keep the prize to $100 or less. Thanks, everyone!
