Mystery Shopping—sometimes also called Secret Shopping—sounds too good to be true: Shop or dine at your favorite places and get paid for it. While there are some scams connected to the industry, it really can be a legitimate source of extra income for the right person. I know this because I’ve been doing it for the past ten years.
Who is the ideal mystery shopper? Someone who is extremely detailed, follows directions to the letter, and can work independently. Most companies have very specific instructions about the assignment (date, time, how many people, etc). Receipts must be kept and feedback must be done correctly and in the time allotted if you wish to be paid. Failure to do so will result in big disappointment and no money!
Most shoppers start on a probation status and can sign up for one shop at a time. As you rise in the ranks, you’ll be eligible for multiple shops and premium shops (things like cruises). Those who live in metro areas will obviously have more to choose from, but I live in the Suburbs and still find plenty.

- Restaurants (fast food & fine dining)

- Bowling alley
- Cell phone store
- Salon
- Hotel
- Clothing store
- Gas station
- Cable companies
I have been offered a lot more jobs than these, but I am particular about what I accept. I will not take a job that is low-paying, overly complicated, or far away. I usually make around $15/hour, plus reimbursements. For me, it’s always been just a casual hobby, but one lady claimed she made $14,000 a year doing it full-time.
To get started with Mystery Shopping, you have to apply for each individual company you want to work with. Yes, this takes tons of effort, but can be worth it in the long run if you plan to shop often. Volition has an enormous list available on their website.
How can you tell if a company is legit? Check to see if they’re a member of the MSPA. It’s the official organization that oversees all the companies. Also know that you never have to pay upfront to mystery shop: no joining fee, application fee, etc!
Typically, you’ll be paid through PayPal or a check and the turnaround time is 30-90 days (usually less, but that’s the longest I’ve waited). Since you’re working as an Independent Contractor, you’ll be responsible for paying your own taxes. It’s very important to keep track of your expenses! I use FreshBooks and it works wonderfully.
Overall, I think Mystery Shopping is a fair payout based on your time and expertise, but don’t expect to make a fortune.
