The Cost of Money Vs. Time

clock      dollarsign

Is it cheaper to make a product or buy it?

Generally, it’s cheaper to make a food item than to buy it—cheaper in dollars. One, however must also consider time. If you’re blessed with an abundance of money, you’re probably short on time and vice versa.

Carefully consider your current situation. Do you stay at home? Unemployed? Retired? A student? You probably do have the time balance.

Are you working full-time? Have a newborn? Have many children? Caring for a sick relative? You probably do have the cash balance.

Cut yourself some slack. None of us can “do it all.” Money-saving tips are supposed to make life easier, not add stress! Just because I like to coupon at 7 stores per week doesn’t mean you have to.

How To Save On Groceries – Price Match

ads

Some people don’t have the time and/or energy to shop multiple stores every week. If that’s you, I’d suggest Price Matching.

Both Walmart and Target are willing to Price Match. Simply bring in the store circulars and they will adjust the price accordingly for an identical item. Coupons can be combined with Price Matching.

For instance: Palmolive dish soap is on sale at CVS this week for $0.99. If they’re all sold out and you don’t want a raincheck, you can pick it up at another store for the same price.

On the surface, it sounds simple. In practice, I’ve found it can be difficult. Even so, I want to share this method because it may help. Go in with the right attitude and don’t expect perfection—especially at Walmart! Very often, the cashier can’t do it properly and will have to call a manager. While you wait, the line grows. It can be annoying and even embarrassing for some shoppers.

Fear not, Ladies! Here are my best tips:

1.  Know the policy:  Both Walmart and Target Price Match, but they do it differently. At Target, you must use the customer service area. At Walmart, you can use customer service or a regular checkout.

2.  Bring in your own flyers. Walmart claims you don’t have to, but you do! They can never find their copies when you’re checking out. Plus, I find it’s easier to match the paper than go on memory.

3.  Shop early or late. Don’t try this on a weekend afternoon.

4.  Identical truly means identical—same size, same brand, etc. Walmart doesn’t honor Buy One, Get One or % off deals. They will substitute their store brand for another generic, but it can be nearly impossibly if it’s not the same size.

Have you ever Price Matched? Was it a good or bad experience?

How To Save On Groceries – Buy Markdowns

I get my biggest savings by using coupons, but it’s my only trick. This tip will work well for all my non-coupon readers who still want to save.

Every time I go into a grocery store, I always check the reduced racks. There is no telling what you will find—meat, produce, dairy, baked goods. You have to dig through and it’s very hit or miss; still, I almost always find a gem.

Today, I bought Sunny D and Helluva Good dip for $0.50 each. It was set to expire in 3 days, so it was reduced. The green peppers had a single soft spot on one! Wouldn’t you buy 3 peppers for $0.99? Just cut out the bad part and move on.

When I first read about this tip years ago, it really grossed me out. I pictured tons of rotting garbage, especially the meat. I’m happy to report that I’ve never once been poisoned by eating markdowns. Occasionally, I have bought something that turned out to be too far gone, but it’s all part of the adventure!

Give it a try; I’m pretty sure you’ll like it!
