National Doughnut Day: Freebies on 6/6!

a1

If you have a Krispy Kreme in your area, you can get a free doughnut on 6/6—National Doughnut Day!

Last year, Dunkin Donuts gave out freebies with any beverage purchase and Tim Horton’s gave out free stuff, too, so there’s a good chance they will also be participating.

I’ve been to Dunkins many times and Tim Horton’s once, but never Krispy Kreme. If you’ve been to a Krispy Kreme, are they really good? I’d love to try some!

Memorial Day Menu

a2

Many grocery stores are having huge sales for the holiday weekend. I’ll be basing my Memorial Day menu on the deals at Shaw’s. For less than $20.00, I can put together a cheap, delicious feast!

a3

Boneless chicken: $1.99/Lb. (I’ll be marinating in BBQ sauce. If you’re expecting a big crowd, do sliders instead of whole pieces.)

a1

Corn: 10 ears for $1.77.  (If you have extras, try making Santa Fe Chicken.)

a1

Watermelon: $4.44.  (Slice it or cut into chunks. Tons of fruit for little $)

a1

Coke products, 12-packs: 5 for $10.00.   (You don’t have to buy 5 for the sale price.)

a1

Hood ice cream: $1.99, with a $1.00/2 coupon.  (I’m getting the limited edition Boston Red Sox flavors)

I’ll also be making broccoli slaw from ingredients I have on hand. This is much more junk food than I normally eat, but I enjoy a treat occasionally.

If you live outside of New England and don’t have access to Shaw’s, search through your local flyers. Deals and prices vary, but each region has something good to offer!

What’s on your holiday menu?

Citrus Chillers

a1

I drink a lot of water, which I know is good for me, but sometimes gets boring. I find that with a few simple additions, water can be much tastier! If you’re looking for something that’s low-cal, hydrating, and tastes awesome, try this recipe for Citrus Chillers.

a1

You’ll need a clean pitcher, 2 oranges, and 1 lemon. Squeeze the citrus juice into the bottom of the pitcher. Add plain or sparkling water to fill. Mix well. Do a taste test. I like it tart, but if you need it sweeter, add a little Splenda or sugar. Chill until icy cold. If made with sparkling water, it needs to be drunk fairly soon; if plain water is used, it will keep well for 2 days in the fridge.

Pour into nice glasses. I like to add a twist of lemon for the snazziest look. Citrus Chillers make a great drink to serve at any summer party!
