The Health Benefits of #LifeSupplemented

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Mom It Forward and the Council for Responsible Nutrition. All opinions are my own.

New year…new and improved me?! YES, I’ve made a promise to myself that 2017 is going to be my best year yet and that means focusing on an area I really struggle with: being healthy.

Like most people, I want to play a proactive role in my own wellness. On a daily basis, I aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water and “eat the rainbow” by including fresh fruit and veggies in a variety of colors at every meal. Despite my best efforts, it’s very difficult to get enough essential nutrients from food alone. There is no such thing as a perfect diet, after all, and I admit that I sometimes give in to junk food cravings!

One of the ways I try to compensate is by taking a high quality dietary supplement. According to a survey from the Council for Responsible Nutrition, I’m in good company: More than 170 million Americans take dietary supplements each year. The most popular are multivitamins (75% of users take these), along with vitamin D, vitamin C, calcium and vitamin B/B complex.

Some common reasons to take supplements include:

    • Joint health
    • Digestive health
    • Skin, hair & nails
    • Healthy aging
    • Bone health
    • Immune health
    • Heart health
    • Overall health
    • To fill in dietary gaps

There are lots of choices when it comes to dietary supplements, so it’s wise to talk with a doctor or other health care practitioner about what’s right for you. Through routine blood work, I found out that I was severely vitamin D deficient. A lack of this particular vitamin can cause many unpleasant side effects. Taking the correct dose of vitamin D daily for 3 months, based on my doctor’s instructions, made all the difference!

Dietary supplements can play an important role in good health, but they are meant as supplements to, not substitutes for, other healthy habits. Making sure we are exercising regularly, sleeping enough nightly, and combatting stress are equally important.

A Journey Through Jewish Food with Almost Kosher

One of the coolest parts of blogging is getting to connect with other bloggers who share similar interests. One of my favorite new blogs is Almost Kosher. As the name suggests, this awesome site is devoted to “Kosher-style,” cooking (food which is not technically kosher but could be produced as kosher if one wishes).

Started by a talented lady named Chava, she views cooking as a spiritual journey that connects her to people and Judaism through food. Raised in the Bay Area of California, she was exposed to a myriad of cultures and learned to appreciate many ethnic flavors and incorporate them into her own creations.

Browse through the recipe collection and you’ll find tasty tidbits from Israel, India, Africa, Mexico, China, and more! Anyone dealing with a restrictive diet will appreciate the selection of dairy free, gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan foods. Lots of good options for holidays and Shabbos as well. Some of my favorites include:

Apricot Chipotle Chicken

Chicken Tandoori (Slow Cooker version)

Israeli Garlic Roasted Chicken

All three are flavorful, filling, and provide much needed inspiration to snap out of the plain old chicken rut. (We eat chicken 3 times a week at least, and some days, I get so sick of it!)

Another neat idea that I can’t wait to try is making a brisket in a pressure cooker. While I’ve made/eaten many, many briskets in my life, I’ve never tried that particular method. Doesn’t this meat look amazing?!

If you’re searching for an easy way to put a unique spin on classic dishes, Almost Kosher should be on your list.

Super Savings Saturday – 1/07/16

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday.

This week I took advantage of the after-holiday sales. There were so many items, at such low prices, I had to restrain myself from buying out the whole stock!

Victoria’s Secret:

The semi-annual sale was super busy, but I pushed my way in and found my favorite undies discounted!

5 lace trim hipster panties, $3.00 each. Total: $15.00! (These are full-back, 100% cotton, totally comfortable and the lace band on top minimizes stomach blubber. Try it, you’ll love them, guaranteed.)

Target:

2 Good Karma flax milk, regular price $3.49. I stacked a 40% off Cartwheel offer with 2 $2.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $0.09 each!

While I was very excited about finding such cheap milk, the trip was really all about finding toys. With prices marked down to 70% off, I cleaned up! Everything will go into my gift closet for future birthdays, holidays, and parties we’re invited to. I ended up spending $68.97 for 9 toys! The best deal was this $4.98 Mega Bloks.

Other items on my list were $0.05 Febreeze candles and free with coupon Maybelline mascara. Neither deal was available at my store, even though it was advertised on many deal blogs. (Clearance deals tend to be hit-or-miss, so I had low expectations going in!)

Have you used any coupons lately?
