Chipotle-Chiptopia

Loving dining out? You’ll want to see this awesome post from The Krazy Coupon Lady about 14 restaurants offering free food with their rewards programs. The list includes:

  • Chipotle
  • Dairy Queen
  • Domino’s
  • Starbucks
  • Jamba Juice
  • Auntie Anne’s Pretzels
  • Subway
  • Papa John’s
  • Dunkin Donuts
  • Qdoba
  • Shari’s Café
  • Carl Jr’s
  • Chili’s
  • Krispy Kreme

Jamba-Juice

All of these sound good to me except for Chipotle. I’m way too afraid of stomach flu or E-Coli poisoning to ever eat there again after the recent outbreaks, but adventurous spirits can risk it.

Oven Free Meal Ideas

When it’s 92 degrees outside, the last thing I want to do is turn the oven on and make a hot house even worse! Here are 3 strategies I use to beat the heat:

1. Serve cold food

Quick to prepare, easy to serve, refreshing to eat. I love a cold dinner in the summer! All of these go over well at my house. Combine 2 or 3 for a complete meal:

  • Salad  (Green, potato, macaroni, coleslaw—we love it all!)
  • Sandwiches
  • Cheese and crackers
  • Veggie tray
  • Bagel with cream cheese
  • Fruit slices
  • Deviled eggs
  • Chips and salsa
  • Yogurt parfait

2. Use a slow cooker

My family will gladly eat cold food. If yours insists on a hot meal, this is the easiest option. These machines are fabulous for containing heat even though the cooking period is long. Even better if you can place it in the garage or on a patio/deck (preferably in the shade). Items I love to make in a slow cooker include:

  • Whole chicken
  • Beef brisket
  • Stew
  • Soup
  • Cake

3. Prepared foods

There’s no shame in picking up a rotisserie chicken or a carton of grilled chicken pieces from the grocery store. The cost is affordable (usually $5.00 on sale) and the aggravation savings is priceless! Normally, I just buy cooked meat because the mark-up on side dishes is so high, but do whatever works best for your situation.

My Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood Party

pw

MomSelect provided me with complimentary party materials, in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.

What turns a simple gathering into a party? Music, of course! Recently, I had the opportunity to host a Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood party, featuring some amazing classical tunes. I invited 4 of my mommy friends and their kids over to introduce them to a new storybook app that takes a beloved story and reinvents it as an interactive musical adventure.

In this updated version—which is the untold prequel to Peter & the Wolf—the story takes place in Hollywood. Newly orphaned Peter flies from Russia to Los Angeles, to stay with his aging hippie grandfather who works for a movie star. Finding it hard to make friends in his new home, Peter instead forms friendships with the creatures around him, including a duck and a bird, then finds the chance to become a hero when a wolf escapes from the zoo, catching him in a most clever way.

Kids travel through a sculpted, painted, animated wonderland that includes 8 games, hundreds of handmade visuals, and 50 minutes of wonderful music.

To set a festive mood, each party goer received a pin as a welcome present.

Special occasions always need a special snack. I made tropical Jell-O shots, complete with fancy umbrellas. (Non-alcoholic, so they could be enjoyed by kids and adults.) We also had popcorn and pretzels to munch on.

While the music played, we let the kids enjoy some coloring.

Even though the party eventually had to end, the fun doesn’t! To learn more about this fun, educational storybook app, check out Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood. You’ll be able to view video clips and download the app on your iPhone or iPad today.

Jewish Beatboxing Group

Jewish beatboxers? Yes, there is such a thing. The Orthobox, a music group comprised of Ilan and Josh, performed on America’s Got Talent. I thought their Tuesday night performance—covering “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor—was very impressive! (So did the judges, all 4 voted “Yes,” advancing them to the next round.)

Another interesting fact: They met in Israel, at the Western Wall, of all places! Missed the audition? Check it out on YouTube.
