Multiple Food Recalls – Check Your Kitchen

Listeria contaminated fruit? Metal-tainted meats? It’s not a scary story, it’s a real life recall and you may have some of these items in your own home. Please check your kitchen and make sure, especially if you have children, elderly, or ill family members. Some of these items could be deadly.

Tyson is recalling 69,093 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken strip products. Check the website for exact product codes and locations. 25 states are included on the list.

Henry Avocado is recalling avocados in 6 states, that can be identified by stickers reading “Bravocado,” or “Organic” or “California.”

I personally bought a dozen avocados to make guacamole the day before the recall was issued and it was only by the grace of God that we didn’t eat every one of them! If you bought any of the above, toss it into the trash immediately, secured from kids and pets, or return for a full refund.

Recalls seems to come frequently these days. Two weeks ago, I had to toss unopened Pillsbury flour that had Salmonella. The FDA regularly updates their danger list and I’m going to start following it more closely and check every label.

Sesame Street Passover: A Seder for Grover

Sesame Street for Passover? Yes, it’s true, with a lovely new book called A Seder for Grover.

According to the publisher: “Very young readers will be introduced to Passover traditions with friends from Sesame Street. Big Bird, Moishe Oofnik, and Avigail join their friend Grover to celebrate. Together they eat matzah, read from the Haggadah, and find the afikomen.”

Author Joni Sussman has created four other Sesame Street books with a Jewish theme and a Yiddish book for youngsters.

A Seder for Grover is part of the Shalom Sesame collection. The website has recipes, crafts, songs, videos, Educator Guides for parents, and a ton of other useful info.

I wish that fun stuff like this had existed when I was young. In so many ways, it’s easier now than ever to be Jewish and to raise Jewish children. No matter where you live, even in the most rural area, you can connect to the global Jewish community and find resources.

Super Savings Saturday – 3/23/19

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday.

This week was so busy, it kept me mostly offline. I did a little social media, but no blogging, which freed up plenty of time to bake/cook for Purim, make costumes, create gift baskets and experience plenty of holiday cheer with friends and family.

I truly love blogging, but I also enjoy my “real” life and I need a balance between the two. Luckily, I can just pick up where I left off and go from there. (It only took me five years of blogging to figure that out and stop stressing!)

I did all of my shopping during 2 hours on Monday morning and found a bunch of goodies.

Walmart:

Colgate mouthwash, regular price $3.96. I used a $2.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $1.96 plus $2.00 Ibotta rebate.

Calphalon 14-piece set, clearance price $40.00. (Originally priced at $159.00, this was a huge savings. I have been looking to replace some of my nonstick cookware with stainless steel, because it’s supposed to be safer. I’m planning to keep these in the box until Passover, use them for the holiday, and then transition it for everyday use.)

Walgreens:

OxiClean laundry detergent, sale price $2.99. I used a $2.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $0.99. (The store had a strict limit, even though none was advertised. Walgreens can be a frustrating place to coupon. Rules vary from store-to-store and it really depends on the individual store mangers. Some are flexible; others are ogres! If you have a choice, try every one in your area and see which is the best.)

Mentos mints, sale price $1.29 plus $1.29 Register Rewards.

CVS:

Extra gum, sale price $0.99. Total: $0.99 plus $0.99 ECB.

2 Kleenex bundle packs, sale price $4.49 each. I used 2 $0.50 manufacturer’s coupons stacked with a $1.00 store coupon. Total: $6.98 plus $5.00 ECB and $1.50 Ibotta rebate. (Almost free tissues is a deal I love!)

Have you used any coupons lately?

TorahLine Passover Game Giveaway

Back by popular demand, I am so excited to host another giveaway for 613 Games, the makers of TorahLine!

Last Passover, everyone was buzzing about Exodus from Egypt, a family game that depicts the story of Exodus through colorful flash cards. It was so successful that a new and improved version has been created. The 2nd edition of Exodus from Egypt includes these great features:

  • 100 event cards (written in English and Hebrew)
  • 6 Overview Cards
  • 54 Tokens
  • Color Rulebook in English
  • Covers the Torah portions Shemot, Va’eira, and Bo

With a total playing time of approximately 15 minutes, it’s a quick, easy, and interactive way to teach Torah to children. Anywhere from 2-6 players—or teams of players—can play, and it’s designed for ages 8 and up.

The game will start out simply by reading verses and putting them in order. As you master the narrative, the advanced rules make it possible to increase the difficulty per player to learn the Torah portion, chapter, and verse number for each event. The game has 10 different rule variations providing hours of fun. (This prevents boredom and makes the game extra valuable.)

My family played it at our Seder in 2018 and it was wonderful! The kids were happy and occupied as I rushed around doing last minute prep and cooking. Having an activity for them is so helpful for moms and it also sparked some interesting discussions about Moses and the Plagues.

613 Games has generously offered to give away one game AND they’re providing a coupon for my readers. Enter code JLADY19 at checkout and you’ll receive a 25% discount. Orders over $25 will receive free shipping.

The TorahLine Passover Game Giveaway will be open thru April 11, 2019. Good luck to everyone!
