Super Savings Saturday – 11/1

a5

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday! Can you believe it’s November already? I hope everyone had a happy Halloween yesterday with plenty of free candy. Don’t forget post-holiday clearance sales will start today. It’s always a good idea to stock up on goodies for next year, or more costumes for Purim.

This week, I found many good deals at Shaw’s, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. I loved getting so many cheap veggies and snacks, some of which also had rebates. October can be a slow month at the drugstores, but as we inch closer to Black Friday, the deals will really start jumping. In the meantime, I continue to look for the best coupon deals.

Halloween Memories

Who’s up for a trip down memory lane?

Like most of you, I will be busy with today’s festivities and it’s making me remember holidays from days gone by. Here is a little peek into my Halloween memories for the curious.

These are probably from my 2nd Halloween. I don’t remember it, obviously, but I do like the pirate outfit (note how I’m posed in the fireplace?!) As for the Jack ‘O Lantern, I’ve always been enthralled. We used to save the pumpkin seeds to roast. Does anyone still do that? I certainly don’t.

I’m guessing these would be around 4 and 5 years of age. The Rainbow Brite chair I’m sitting on was a coveted item in my childhood. The orange plastic bucket in the background was from McDonald’s and we used those to Trick-or-Treat. As for the infamous Black Cat costume, oh my, I loved that one and repeated it multiple times. I think it had something to do with the ears and bowtie.

Halloween with a friend, after we moved to Florida. I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t recall her name! I do, however, remember her costume like it was yesterday. She was a Hershey’s Kiss, which I found so clever. I’m on the right, dressed as some kind of princess (another look I loved & repeated as evidenced by this great pic with my sis. I’m thinking we’re 2 and 6 here. Isn’t she cute as a pumpkin?)

I wasn’t kidding about the Black Cat. Here I am on the left, Dad in the middle, and my two younger sisters. Notice how my dad is in total ’80’s mode, with the Tom Selleck facial hair and oversize glasses. I’m guessing middle sis was a ballerina and the baby was a dragon. Also taken in Florida.

It seemed like we ended up with mountains of candy when I was young. I don’t know if people were more generous then, or my memory is faulty. My favorite treats were always the Sugar Babies, Milk Duds, and red lollipops. We would dump all the candy onto the floor and my dad would “check” it for phantom razor blades (just another Urban Legend). Of course, every piece was safe, but he had to taste test a handful just to be sure. Once the all-clear was sounded, we’d gorge ourselves until we moaned with stomachaches.

I kept Trick-or-Treating until my early teens, but the little years were definitely the most fun. The older I get, the more I miss that time. I don’t dress up anymore, but I’d do it in a heartbeat if Hungry Bear would ever agree to attend a costume party—hint, hint!

Chicken Burrito Bowls

a1

What do you do when a Mexican food craving hits and you’re out of tortillas? Run to Chipotle? (You could, but it’s so overpriced.) I like to improvise! I had all of the ingredients needed to make chicken burritos, but no shells, so I just skipped them and tossed everything else together.

Chicken Burrito Bowls are fantastic, because they’re quick to prepare and very flexible on ingredients. Like most recipes, I consider this to be a starting point, so experiment to your heart’s content.

To make Chicken Burrito Bowls, you will need:

*  2 Cups cooked rice  (can be white or brown, I prefer white.)

*  2-3 Pieces of cooked chicken breast, chunked or shredded

*  1 Can black beans  (Goya is my fav.)

*  1 Cup cooked corn  (I used frozen).

*  1 Tomato, chopped

*  1 Red onion, diced

*  2 Avocados, diced  (Store bought guacamole is a good alternative, too.)

*  Small bunch of cilantro  (totally optional.)

*  Juice of a lime

*  Salt  (use a generous amount)

*  Tabasco (amount depends on how much spice you can tolerate.)

A note on meat and dairy: I don’t generally mix the two in my own kitchen, which is why no cheese or sour cream was used. If you’d liked to, go for it.

Start with a large mixing bowl. Add the lime juice, tobacco, and salt. Mix together. There’s no “perfect” method to layering, but this is how I like to do it:

1.  Rice

2.  Beans

3.  Onion

4.  Chicken

5.  Corn

6.  Tomato

7.  Avocado

8.  Cilantro

Chicken Burrito Bowls are addictive! Seriously, plate these individually or you may end up inhaling the entire bowl. I still miss the tortilla—not gonna lie—but these are tasty and filling, plus they’re lower in calories.
