Reader Input Wanted: Help me Pick a New Laptop

aa

Since I have the smartest and most generous readers in the world, I want to ask you guys for some advice. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m in the market for a new laptop. After a lot of searching I still can’t make up my mind. I know that I want something at least 15 inches, reasonably fast, with a super-quiet fan. Currently, I use a Dell, but I’m open to anything.

If you use a laptop and love it, send me a recommendation. If you hate a certain model/brand, tell me that, too, so I can stay away from it. Thanks, all!

We bought an Acer for our kids when they were younger, primarily because kids break things sometimes and we didn’t want to invest in a Mac (like we use) for them. The price of the Acer was great & it was just perfect for them. I’m not sure if a 15 inch option is available in that machine, though. My husband & I have used Macs for many years and I will NEVER go back to a PC. I use a MacBook Pro 15 inch laptop with a backlit keyboard. I can’t even remember the last time I had any kind of operational issue with it. It is extremely reliable and the backlit keyboard is great to use to surf the web while watching TV in the evening without bothering others around me with the bright light of a lamp. You will be able to find many PC options cheaper than a Mac, but the longevity and reliability of a Mac is well worth the investment. They are worth EVERY DOLLAR!!! Good luck! :0)

Macs are so user friendly, they work right out of the box. After years of using PCs in school (because when I was a kid, very few people had computers at home), after I got married my husband introduced me to a Mac (this was in the early 90s). I was so scared to try it out because I was sure I would have a hard time adjusting to a different machine & operating system. Less than a day! I was hooked. Never looked back, thinking about going back to a PC, ever, makes me have anxiety. If you have an Apple Store near you, make a trip there & ask a sales rep to show you a Mac and demonstrate how it works. Or I’m sure YouTube has many videos about how different Mac programs work. I would encourage you to do some research on YouTube and blogs to learn more about Macs. If you decide to try one, I think many of us would love for you to come back to this post and let us know how much you love it!!!

That is an awesome suggestion about visiting an Apple store, I will definitely try that. I’ve heard that Macs are much more expensive than a PC, but they last longer. This is why I love my readers so much; you guys give the best advice. Thanks!

I have an Apple MacBook Pro. It is the best in my opinion. It is fast, very quite and handles viruses very well, without me even noticing. I still have an old MacBook Pro that was my son’s, bought it in 1997. It still works, not fast, but it runs. I love how durable these are, they cost more but will outlast any other brand by far 🙂

Our family have been Mac users for over 20 years. When either my husband or myself get a new machine (which is not that often) our old Macs get passed down to the kids. We have Macs in our house that are 10+ years old that still run well. And viruses are darn near unheard of. Maybe once or twice in the last 15 years I’ve opened something that caused multiple pop ups to open on my screen, I closed them out and never thought about it again. The anti-virus protection is great. And here’s something to consider…I am very bad about not updating to newer software or updating anything at all on my machine. It makes little to no difference. My current MacBook Pro is about 5-6 years old and still works as well as when I cracked open the box on the thing brand new. It’s gotten a bit slow about loading up web pages sometimes, but I think that’s on me for not updating things as much as I should. And even though it has slowed down a tad, it still loads content lightning fast compared to every PC I’ve ever used. I used a PC at work (for the state government) and I just wanted to SCREAM at that thing every day because it would crash, lose my content or corrupt important files, get infected with viruses that made me lose days of having it while the IT department tried to fix it, and often take 20-25 minutes just to boot up in the morning. So aggravating!!! That being said, my husband and son (in addition to Macs) also have some PCs that they use for work and gaming, and they have basically built them themselves to get the best of all internal parts, but they still prefer Macs for most computing needs.

OMG, yes, that’s exactly the problem I have! The crashes, screen freeze, runs slow, updates don’t install properly. I’m learning so much about Macs; this is amazing.
