Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!
This week was all about meat. After taking inventory of my freezer, it was obvious I needed to restock (the only things in there were frozen veggies and a pizza!). Luckily, I was able to find lots of Manager’s Specials and mark downs. Because the deals at the drug stores were terrible, I skipped them entirely. (Does anyone really need more Propel water? Not me.)
Hannaford:
I found 2 small packages of beef brisket and 1 truly enormous pack that weighed over 6-lbs. The average price for brisket is 5 or 6 dollars; mine was on sale for only $3.49/lb.
Pack 1: $6.27.
Pack 2: $7.32.
Pack 3: $22.89.
Just as an observation, I prefer the smaller size. The largest pack was untrimmed and had much more fat. Even after cutting all the fat off, there was still a ton of meat, so it’s worth the money, but be prepared for extra prep time.
Shaws:
2 packs of deli turkey, on sale $3.99 with $2.00 coupons. Total: $1.99 each.
2 chicken drumsticks, BOGO sale and $1.00 coupons. Total: $2.67 for both!
2 eye round thin-sliced steaks, with $1.50 coupon and $2.00 coupon. Total: $3.38 and $4.01!
With Thanksgiving coming up soon, I will be looking for deals on whole turkey and turkey breasts, but for now, we’re ok on meat.
Did you find any cheapies or freebies? Feel free to link or comment.
Good deals! I’ve noticed that marked down meat is getting harder to find in my area. My go to store for those was Save A Lot but there seems to have been a change of philosophy at the store (same management, though) and I haven’t seen marked down meat or milk and free for the taking cardboard boxes in several weeks. The marked down produce is much less frequent as well. Thankfully my freezer is FULL of meat. I had to beg off the $0.99/lb chicken breast sale last week, as well as the $2.00/lb pork loin and the $3.69/lb beef tip roast 🙁 I don’t think I’ll have room for turkeys but my middle son works for Universal Studios and told me he should be getting a free turkey right before Thanksgiving and he is planning on giving it to me. Yay!
I also don’t like when meat has too much fat. I don’t like fat! FYI, there is a blog called NaNa Pinches Her Pennies where she recently posted her way of rendering the fat so she can reuse it. As much as I hate waste and I love saving money, I haven’t felt the urge to save the fat that way, but if someone struggles with money, it’s a great way to avoid wasting something they spent their precious grocery budget pennies on.
I agree that the drugstore deals were terrible this past week and this upcoming week doesn’t look any better to me. I did get the Propel water at CVS because my daughter likes it.
It seems like all the deals, whether it’s meat or drugstore freebies are less plentiful than they were years ago. That’s why I like to stock up whenever I can so I don’t have to pay full price. The meat sale prices you listed are very close to the ones here. So cool about the free frozen turkey! Do you also get free tickets to Universal? That would be awesome.
I hadn’t heard of NaNa but I will definitely check out her site. Rendering fat is just too much for me. The smell must be god-awful. I like to be frugal, but there is such a thing as being extreme.
I hadn’t thought about the smell… Well of course there are extremes (not using toilet paper falls in that category for me, call me spoiled but I’d rather pay for toilet paper to just flush it down the toilet than not use any), but some folks also don’t have a choice because they have very limited resources and saving money with such things as rendering fat (like our great grandparents and theirs might have done) is one of the ways THEY save money. She’s a senior citizen on a very limited income and no way to really get to the stores that we like to go to and she is very wise. I really like her blog.
My son could probably sign us in to Universal Studios for free but we don’t like crowds and Universal really doesn’t do anything for me. We get to go for free once a year through my husband’s employer and nowadays I force him to go just so that we can get the free catered lunch, lol. I worked for Disney for 15 years so we’ve had our fill of theme parks 🙂 But I’ve definitely take the free turkey if he does get it, lol.
I am constantly amazed at how clever and frugal people can be on a tight budget. The Prudent Homemaker blog is a great example. I don’t knock anyone for rendering fat or making fabric toilet paper, but it’s too hardcore in my book. When toilet paper can be found for $3.99/dozen, why wouldn’t anyone buy it?!! Same thing with the cloth diaper people. There is a cost for electric and the washing machine, too. It doesn’t save that much, plus there’s the time factor.
I bet working in a theme park is nothing like attending one! My sister who lives in Florida is so over theme parks. They’ve been a ton of times and it loses the novelty. The crowds and hot weather is overwhelming for me, but families up north are OBSESSED with Disney, Sea World, Universal, etc.
