Super Savings Saturday – 5/9/15

a3

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

It was a difficult week around here. Not feeling well at all, coupled with a lot of fighting/anger with Hungry Bear made for some difficult days. (My ongoing health problems make me testy and he’s unhappy at work, so we’re both crabby lately.) We don’t fight too often, but when we do, it’s always over something stupid and this time was no different. Afterwards, we both apologized and I received some gorgeous pink roses! I love any kind of flower.

As for deals, I found some goodies at Shaw’s and Target, plus I bought a few unremarkable staples at Market Basket. I didn’t find time or energy to check out the drug stores, but there was nothing special advertised, so it’s ok. Now that Rite Aid has switched over to Plenti rewards, I have to learn that system anyway, which will take some getting used to.

Shaw’s:

2 Wild Salmon, 3-day sale price $5.99/LB. Total: $19.47!  (Salmon is normally very expensive, so I was excited to find it at this price.)

2 Mission Soft Taco tortillas, on sale $2.50. I used 2 $0.55 Manufacturer’s coupons (doubled). Total: $1.40 each.

Everyday Essential cheese, regular price $2.50. Total: Free with purchase of 2 tortillas.

Everyday Essential fat free cream cheese, marked down to $1.00. (Total waste of money! The taste was so bad we actually tossed it out after 2 bites.)

Target:

2 Huggies natural baby wipes, 32-ct, regular price $1.47. I used 2 $0.50 Manufacturer’s coupons stacked with a $2.50/2 mobile coupon. Total: Free!  (The Huggies deal was featured on every coupon website and I was worried the shelf clearers would’ve beat me to it, but my store had tons in stock.)

4 Gold ‘N Plump chickens, regular price $5.79 with $3.00 mark down stickers. I also had 2 $1.00 manufacturer’s coupons that I received for signing up for the e-club, thanks to a reader’s tip! Total: $2.29 each!

3 Market Pantry pasta sauces, on sale $1.00. I used a $1.00/3 mobile coupon. Total: $0.67 each!

I frozen one of the chickens and bulk cooked the other 3. That was turned into 2 huge casseroles of chicken ziti plus another dish of Mediterranean Roasted Veggies with some shredded chicken mixed in. I still have a small amount of meat left and will make chicken salad sandwiches tomorrow. It’s really amazing how many meals you can stretch a chicken into!

Did you find any freebies?

I had fresh salmon in Alaska a few years ago, and it spoiled me forever on farm fish. There really is no comparison;) Getting a deal on wild salmon is a real “catch.”
    (sorry- couldn’t help myself)

I notice that you write often about having health problems. I’m dealing with Lupus and people don’t believe me when I say that it’s a struggle every single day of my life just to keep going. The pain and depression are so intense, it’s not even possible to describe. Do you mind sharing what illness you have? I will pray for you and please send your prayers my way.

Oh Tina, how my heart goes out to you!!! I am so sorry to hear that you’re in pain and struggling. Lupus is actually something I was tested for, but came back negative. I’ve had tons of bloodwork, Brain MRI, visited many doctors, and never gotten an answer. My main issues are headaches, eye problems, dizziness, and urinary pain. Everything is chronic and yes, you are right, the pain is HELL and the pain causes depression/anxiety/and fear. It would be my pleasure to pray for you, daily if you’d like. Try to stay strong and know that you can comment anytime or email directly if there’s any way I can help, even just a kind word.

Sorry to hear about your health problems and the fighting, but glad to know you made up and got nice roses to boot!
So glad you got a great deal on the chickens and my tip helped! They weren’t marked down at my Target this week, sadly, but hopefully they will be before my $1.50 coupons expire later on this month.
We don’t get double coupons in Florida but the Mission tortillas were on BOGO at Publix and I used the same coupons so I got mine for $1.57 for 2 bags, which I thought was a great price, and then remembered (but too late!) that last month I bought myself a tortilla press on Amazon with some Swagbucks gift cards… argh. Homemade tortillas are delicious and way cheaper too. Oh well. I also got the marinara sauce at Target, which was a good deal.
I did get a few freebies. I post my weekly grocery shopping recap on Wednesdays, here is this past week’s post if anyone is interested at all http://imperfectlyfrugally.blogspot.com/2015/05/grocery-shopping-this-week.html (personally, I love looking at what people buy and how much they pay for what they buy… which is why I love your Super Savings Saturday posts!)
    Have a great week!

Just looked at your grocery deals and you did awesome! I’d love to start linking up with you every week. I also really enjoy seeing what other buy are buying and cooking. I’ve never made tortillas before. Is it a lot of effort?

It’s actually really easy and cheap and my husband swears that he likes the homemade tortillas much better. There are tons of recipes and Youtube videos that show you how to cook them too. I do like the convenience of store-bought tortillas if I can get them really cheap, though. I haven’t used my tortilla press yet, until now I just rolled the dough with a rolling pin to get it very thin, but I’m terrible at rolling it in circles so mine always looked wonky. Once I’ve used up the Mission tortillas, I’ll have to try the press!
