Super Savings Saturday – 7/18/15

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

This week was pretty slow. Although I saw plenty of “Christmas in July” sale signs, the deals didn’t seem to correspond. (Why does Christmas come twice a year anyway? I don’t get it…maybe because I don’t celebrate it?)

I ended up skipping the drugstores completely (the only thing I wanted was free Hershey bars at Walgreens, but I’m craving sweets so strongly, I skipped it for fear I’d eat every one in a single sitting).

Even with the slim pickings, I still found great deals on meat, produce, and toys.

Target:

This trip was a repeat to fix the one that got messed up. I’m happy to report that I remembered my cartwheel coupon, found many great toys at a clearance price, and managed to hide them in the garage before anyone could see. I didn’t get a pic, but my haul included Hello Kitty, 2 board games, 1 puzzle, and a Ninja Turtle mask. Total was $28.02!

I also found some clearance items for me—$1.99 flip flops and $7.49 yoga pants. I wasn’t sure if I was cool enough to try navy camo, but it’s been ok so far and the pants are super soft & comfy.

Shaw’s:

Split chicken breast was on sale for $0.99/lb. I wanted to stock up on huge amounts, but the store was very depleted. I left with 2 family packs and a rain check. My total was $13.78.

Local Produce Store:

Since this store is on the same street as Shaw’s, it’s convenient to swing by afterwards. I almost always find some marked down treasure and this week was no exception. There huge packs of cheap produce.

2 Tomatoes, $0.99/pack.

Bag of mixed potatoes (Yukon gold, red, russet), $0.89/pack.

Vidalia onions, $0.79/lb.

2 Nectarines, $0.89/pack.  (2 random peaches & 3 plums were mixed in.)

Apples (Pink Lady & Red Delicious0, $0.99/6-pack.

Aside from a few spots, all of the produce was perfect. I made the tomatoes into pasta sauce, chopped and roasted the onions, the potatoes were turned into a salad, the apples were eaten fresh and the nectarines were sliced/frozen for smoothies. I love deals like this because I get so much more for the money and provided I do something with it quickly, none is wasted.

Wow, kudos to you! That’s some serious deals on produce and chicken breasts!

I had seen a post about the RR on the Hershey’s caramel bar at Walgreens but my ad didn’t mention those at all and there was no signage in the store next to them so I didn’t even bother buying it.

I didn’t get wonderful deals on groceries for the most part this week, aside from my weekly deals of Driscoll’s strawberries at Super Target since I have $1.00/1 coupons for them from the Driscoll’s Consumer Panel (so that made them $0.86 a quart after all coupons and discounts) and also organic cabbage also at Super Target that was marked down to $0.69 a head down from $2.69 a head. I grabbed the last two and they’re sitting in my fridge. I’ll make Chinese Cabbage Salad this week and probably also some cabbage soup that I’ll freeze. I also got a 20 oz package of JustBARE boneless chicken thighs marked down $3.00 to $2.49 and I had a $1.00 manufacturer coupon for them so that made them $1.37 after all coupons and discounts (I just realized that I miscalculated that on my own blog… so I saved $1.00 more than I accounted fort! Math has never been my forte)

My Dollar Tree has $1.00 flip flops, still, and I might just buy a pair as a spare since I use those as my gardening shoes year-round and they tend to fall apart after a few months.

I was disappointed that my Super Target doesn’t seem to carry the Seeds of Change rice mixes anymore. There was a 20% Cartwheel offer and $1.50/1 coupons to stack and that would have made for some cheap, already cooked, side dishes.

Nathalie, I love hearing about all the great stuff you find. I think what you bought is awesome, especially organic cabbage for $0.69 and $0.89 strawberries, WOW! I don’t have a Super Target and many of the grocery items I see for sale online aren’t available to me either (don’t think my store ever carried Seeds of Change).

Is your Chinese Cabbage Salad on your blog? I’d love the recipe if you’re willing to share. It’s 90 degrees here today and anything cold sound so good to me right now.

I just checked and no, I never posted the recipe. I’ll try to do that in the next day. As long as it’s still in my “Salads” binder and not buried in the pile of recipes that I had pulled from binders but never refiled, we’re good 🙂 It’s really yummy, although I suspect not very sliming because of all the sugar in the dressing. But really yummy 🙂 LOL
