Planning a party is fun…paying for it is not! Whenever possible, I try to save money by looking for bargains, especially on disposable items. Since everything at Dollar Tree is so affordable, I’m picking up lots of supplies for Halloween.

For a quick and easy decoration, it’s hard to beat crepe paper. I love to mix orange and black together. Table covers and silverware in the same colors adds to the festive mood.

I paid less than $10.00—such a good price and much less than a Big Box store would be.

Did you know that Dollar Tree also sells costume accessories, candy, and crafts? Best of all, everything can be ordered online, ensuring you’ll have a spook-tacular celebration with a minimum of fuss!

Can You Force Someone to Repent?

repentance_forgiveness-570x265

Ah, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and also the day of exhaustion (without fail, it is always a hard day around here, every single year). Between fasting, extremely long temple services, strong religious overtones about guilt/sin, and lots of folks in close quarters, nerves get frayed very, very easily.

At my house, a squabble is to be expected, but this year, it was a knock-down, drag out fight. What started as a simple disagreement between two people morphed into a group debate about repentence, namely can someone be “forced” to repent?

Opinions seemed to run the gamut: One lady said everyone should apologize, sorry or not. Another person said he wouldn’t apologize, under any circumstances, ever (don’t ask…). Yet another said: “Repentance is a waste of time because you can’t undo the original crime.”

Personally, I believe that repentance is generally a good thing. We are all human and we all make mistakes. When I do something wrong, I admit it freely, and try not to repeat the behavior. But that is my choice. Not everyone shares my feelings and if someone isn’t sorry, insisting they issue a fake apology, whether it’s to a human being or the Lord above, is truly useless. Scripture is very clear that one must atone of their own free will, same as a victim must freely accept an apology. If someone is shamed or goaded into repenting, that’s not authentic.

In an ideal world, nobody would ever hurt another’s feelings, injure their person, or steal their property. There would be no adultery, no murder, no blasphemy, no sin at all. Of course, that world doesn’t exist! So long as we continue to sin—and every person on earth is a sinner—we will need to repent. We are not required to be perfect, but we should be mindful of our own shortcomings and how they can negatively effect us and others.

How do you feel about repentance?

Judaism 101 has an excellent article full of tips to make Yom Kippur fasting easier. Staying hydrated, avoiding salt beforehand, and taking a nap during the holiday are all things I try to do and it really helps!

“Timeless” is Must-See TV

If time travel was possible, would you do it? Should you do it? And, most importantly, what would the outcome be?

An interesting new action-adventure TV show, Timeless, tackles this thought-provoking topic. The series starts with a dangerous criminal stealing a secret time machine. Intent on re-shaping history, his goal is to prevent the Hindenburg’s explosion in 1937. On the surface, that would seem like a good idea—nobody would have to die needlessly—but changing the course of a single event could alter everything in the future—in ways we can’t even imagine… (Watch the pilot episode here.)

The fate of the world hangs in the balance. The only hope is an unexpected trio: a scientist, a soldier, and a history professor. Using the machine’s prototype, they have two goals—staying one step ahead of this dangerous thief and making sure they don’t affect the past themselves in any way (much easier said than done!).

Talk about intrigue and excitement, huh? With peppy writing, a stellar cast, and great plot twists, this show is fabulous. My favorite character is female lead, Lucy Preston. Portrayed by the super-talented Abigail Spencer, she is effective as a historian without being a know-it-all. (I really liked her on Rectify as well. Her range is huge.)

Competent and steady, but still vulnerable, Lucy will be relatable for a lot of women. With so much junk on TV, it’s refreshing to see strong female characters portrayed with successful careers. Not only is Lucy an empowered individual, time travel provides the perfect backdrop to feature lots of vintage fashions (check out the cool beret).

Tune in to NBC at 10:00PM on Monday nights to watch Timeless. Come with an open mind and enjoy the fantasy.
