Super Savings Saturday – 10/08/16

cc

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

It was a slow week. I didn’t mind one bit because I’m still recovering from the holiday and needed a break badly. On Friday, I enjoyed a free iced coffee, courtesy of Cumberland Farms (chain convenience store here in New England). This promo is good for the entire month of October. I also picked up these goodies:

Sally Beauty:

Free black headband with $5.00 mobile coupon. (Does anyone else think this store has the worst chemical smell?! Oh my, I had to leave here in a hurry.)

CVS:

Biotrue contacts solution, sale price $7.99. I stacked a $3.00 manufacturer’s coupon with a $3.00 store coupon. Total: $1.99 plus $2.00 ECBs!

2 Bai drinks, sale price $2.00. Total: $4.00 plus $4.00 ECBs! (Only bought because they were free after rebate and wouldn’t buy again due to the odd taste.)

Other items on my list were Nexium antacid and Kit Kat bars. My CVS was out of both.

Shaw’s:

3 dozen organic, cage free egg dozens, marked down to $0.99 each because they were expiring in a day. I scrambled all of them at once. We ate half as a “Breakfast for Dinner” meal and I made the remainder into burritos for the freezer.

Lost Without My Day Planner

b7cd3b40cb02a2f833f8bc5fe0e79c72

Exhausted, over-worked, over-scheduled, and anxious. Sounds like the life of the modern American, right? It certainly describes mine. Between cooking, cleaning, couponing, blogging, family life, and the occasional hobby, it’s very difficult for me to find enough hours in the day to finish everything I need to accomplish. When I try to wing it, I feel especially frazzled and behind. Getting organized, specifically by regularly keeping a day planner, has made a world of difference.

I’ve always been a huge list maker and calendar-keeper, but I would tend to write things down on scrap paper or leave my notes in different places rather than condense everything into one folder (big mistake).

For an investment of $14.99, I purchased a 3-ring binder and plastic binder sheets at Staples. I’m the sort of person that tends to be extremely detail oriented, so I wanted lots of separate sections. Feel free to customize according to your own needs. Here is what’s in mine:

  • Cover page (Year, name, and my cell phone number in case it’s lost)
  • Plastic pocket page (where I have some extra paper)
  • Master Daily Schedule
  • Morning/Evening Routines
  • Daily Cleaning Projects & Emergency Quick Clean
  • Business Work (Posts, giveaways, social media, etc.)
  • Appointments
  • Extra Projects List
  • Weekly Menu Planner
  • Grocery/Shopping List (divided by store)

The main benefit of the plastic sheet is the ability to check items off with a dry erase marker and then re-use the list. I find this works better for me than a plain notebook. Another thing I like about the binder is that it’s large enough to not be misplaced. I suggest picking a color you love as well since you’ll be using it so often. Mine is in my all-time favorite shade of purple.

For those who want an electronic option, there are tons of apps and Google Calendar. Personally, I do better with a hard copy and it’s a lot easier on my eyes than staring at a screen. Whichever method you prefer, any type of plan is better than none. I know I’m completely lost without mine!

Amazing Apple Cake

The verdict is in: the new recipe I tried for Rosh Hashanah is a keeper. Along with the customary Honey cake, I made an apple version. Since it was a success, I’m nicknaming it “Amazing Apple Cake.”

Similar to coffee cake, it’s moist inside, slightly crusty outside, and thick. Oh, and did I mention it smells like heaven from the combination of spices? Despite all the hubbub, I did manage to take a quick picture. By no means anything extraordinary, you should still get the general idea. I think the side view, with the layers, is so pretty!

To make an Amazing Apple Cake, you will need:

  • 7 cups peeled & sliced baking apples (Gala or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 3 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder

Assemble two large bowls and a 9×13 glass Pyrex. Grease glass and set aside. In first bowl, toss the apples with the cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/2 cup of the sugar. In other bowl, blend oil and remaining sugar. Stir in eggs, milk, and vanilla. Fold in flour, salt, and baking powder, then combine until batter is totally smooth.

Spoon half the batter into the Pyrex. Arrange the apples in a layer on top, then spread the remaining batter over the apples. Bake at 350 degrees, uncovered for approximately 1 hour. Remove from oven and cool completely before sprinkling with powdered sugar.

This cake was more popular with adults than kids, but it was eaten—and enjoyed—by everyone. Because it’s not super sweet or particularly filling, some folks chose to take a second serving (good to know if you’re feeding a crowd). While I don’t think I’d ever make this dessert alone for the holiday, it was a nice addition to the usual favorites. Next time I plan to offer whipped cream as well.
