5 Ways to Stomp Out Bullying

2016-bsd-bonton-master-800-cropped

Today is Stomp Out Bullying’s Blue Shirt Day. Having dealt with this firsthand when I was a child and then as a parent, I can honestly say that bullying does leave lifelong, invisible scars. Thankfully, we are much more aware about this epidemic than we were a decade ago. Once thought to be an isolated or small problem, we now know that the amount of people effected by bullying is truly astounding! Here are 5 easy ways to combat bullying:

1) Prevention: Every school should hold an annual assembly about bullying, letting students and faculty know it will not be tolerated. Clear policies should be in place for bullying prevention and when the rules are broken, bullies are held accountable for their bad behavior.

2) Report it: Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad apples in every school, no matter how hard we try. Bullying happens everyday and many victims stay silent out of shame or fear. We must teach our children that it’s NEVER their fault and encourage them to report bullying to teachers, principals, coaches, counselors, and parents.

3) Document it: Some schools don’t take bullying seriously. We may have to report it more than once or to different administrators before anything is resolved. It helps if there’s a clear record of what happened, who was involved, where and when it occurred.

4) Stand up for another victim:  Even if your children isn’t being targeted, it’s pretty good odds that they know someone who is. Stress that they can help another child from feeling isolated by being a buddy on school grounds, getting together after school, or sitting together on the bus. Parents can also be a support for other adults dealing with this complex issue.

5) Fight back:  In some situations, it’s okay to confront a bully directly. Simply by saying “Stop bugging me” or “You’re being mean” can be effective under the right circumstances.

Super Savings Saturday – 10/01/16

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

It’s the first day of October and almost Rosh Hashanah (Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall…) This week I had a lot of holiday cleaning, cooking, and general prep that took up most of my time. I did manage to visit one grocery store and one drugstore for a few deals and necessities. I’m happy to report that because I planned ahead, the holiday stress should be kept to an absolute minimum. Now I can party like it’s 5777 (Yes, that line is so corny, but it’s also hilarious).

Shaw’s:

Split chicken breast, rain check price $0.99/lb. Total: $21.08! (This is my stock up price for bone-in chicken. It sure wasn’t fun hauling over 20 lbs home, portioning it out, pouring in marinades, and then stashing it in the freezer. What will be nice, however, is having tons of cheap protein on-hand.)

Gala apples, sale price $0.77/lb. Total: $11.55! (These were super cheap. The only catch was that they’re sold by the tote so a couple pieces were yucky. At this price, I don’t mind too much. I bought a bunch for snacks and baking. I’m trying a new cake recipe for Rosh Hashanah. If it’s any good, I’ll share.)

Everyday Essentials paper plates. Total: $1.00! (Found on the reduced rack because the package was ripped. Nothing wrong with the contents and 1/5 of the normal price.)

Experimenting with Eden’s Semilla Jojoba Oil

Silky smooth, moist, radiant skin…every woman’s dream, right? There are about a million products on the market that claim to produce just that. Unfortunately, most of them don’t live up to the hype, and many of them take an iffy complexion and actually make it worse! (That’s usually because of perfume, dye, preservatives, and other nasties.)

What I crave is a natural product without a laundry list of ingredients. A company called Eden’s Semilla makes an excellent product, Jojoba oil, that is truly awesome.

Never heard of Jojoba? It’s a very unique product. Structurally and chemically similar to human sebum, it’s non-toxic, non-comedogenic, non-allergenic, and anti-bacterial, making it a safe choice even if you have sensitive or breakout prone skin. It’s also not an irritant, so it can safely be used around the eyes.

What makes Eden’s Semilla Jojoba oil different from others on the market? All of these great features:

    • Cold Pressed
    • Unrefined
    • Rich in vitamins & minerals
    • 100% Organic

It can be used on skin, hair, and nails, making it a perfect all-around moisturizer. Because it’s highly concentrated, only one or two drops will be needed to cover your entire face (even less for cuticles). There is no greasy feeling and it absorbs quickly.

Jojoba can also be used as a carrier oil. I regularly use Peppermint oil for headaches and Lavender oil for insomnia. By mixing them with a little Jojoba, all of my oils will stretch further.

Eden’s Semilla is so sure you’ll enjoy their oil, they offer a 100% money back guarantee. Learn more about their fabulous products and/or purchase them here.

Are Your Kids Prepared for Emergencies?

gobag

Extreme weather, terrorism, school shootings—every day, 69 million U.S. children are separated from their families when emergencies strike. After Hurricane Katrina there were more than 5,000 reports of missing children. It took 7 months to reunite the last child with her family. (Pretty scary, huh?)

While we may not be able to control what happens in the future, we can try to prepare for the worst. Having a packed bag for every member of the family with necessities is a very important place to start. I’ve filled ours with toiletries, shelf-stable foods, and a few other goodies. Another vital step for parents is  creating ICE (In Case of Emergency) cards for our kids.

These cards contain relevant info that will help in case of separation. Your child’s ICE card should include 3 emergency contacts—including an out-of-town contact, because during emergencies, local communications are often down.

Make your ICE contact cards at www.SavetheChildren.org/ICE.  It’s free and easy!  Fill out one form for your whole family online (Save the Children will not store your child’s info anywhere).  Print out the cards (you’ll get two copies for each child), cut and fold.  Put one copy in a luggage tag to keep inside your child’s bag.  Keep the other copy in your wallet.

Will you join me in this important effort? Let me know if you have created ICE cards!
