Super Savings Saturday – 3/5/16

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

This week, Rite Aid was the place to be. With tons of monthly freebies available for March, I was able to stock up on lots of medicine. The weekly deals were good for hair care and toothpaste. Because I had enough points, I was able to get everything pictured for FREE!

I also shopped CVS (struck out completely) and Target (tons of cheap fruit).

Rite Aid:

dove

2 Dove style & care, sale price $3.00. I used a $3.00/2 manufacturer’s coupon and activated $3.00 extra Plenti points for 2 Dove products. Total: $3.00, plus $6.00 Plenti Points!

ra

Rite Aid medicated patch, sale price $5.00. Total: $5.00, plus $5.00 Plenti Points!

Colgate Total, sale price $2.99. I used a $2.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: $0.99, plus $2.00 Plenti Points!

Arnic

Arnicare gel, sale price $10.00. I used a $3.00 manufacturer’s coupon. Total $7.00, plus $10.00 Plenti Points!

cura

Cura-Heat Patches, sale price $5.00. Total: $5.00, plus $5.00 Plenti Points!

CVS:

Every coupon site was raving about free Purina Beneful dog food. (Combining a bogo sale with a bogo coupon.) I stopped in, hoping to get 4 bags, but it was a no-go. The manager told me “CVS is losing too much money” so they pulled every bag off the shelf and refused to issue any rain checks. Crazy, huh?

bana

Target:

Normally, bananas are $0.25 each. For some unknown reason, Target lowered the price. I grabbed 3 bunches, brought them home, and chopped everything for the freezer. Total: $2.40!

How many deals did you find?

Isaac Mizrahi: Shunned by the Jewish Community

Isaac+Mizrahi+QVC+New+York+Fashion+Week+Runway+VT-ScmqUBhjl

While thumbing through my copy of Hadassah magazine’s Feb/March issue, I came upon an intriguing article about Isaac Mizrahi. Anyone who enjoys watching QVC will recognize him—for his colorful fashion designs, crazy hair, and extremely zany personality.

Born into a Syrian-Jewish family, Isaac was raised in Brooklyn and attended an Orthodox yeshiva. While he strongly identifies with his Sephardic heritage, he discuses why he left the Orthodox community:

“I had such a bad formative experience with the actual religion and its teachings. I was so mistreated and misunderstood in that yeshiva, and it was so unfair and wrong. I don’t want it to sound vengeful because I have a great life, but when I left it, I really left it behind. I didn’t look back. When I grew up you couldn’t be Jewish and gay. There was no way to reconcile those two things.”

When asked about his family, he replied:

“I have two older sisters I love dearly. They became very Orthodox and it continues to drive a wedge between us because they are not permitted to accept certain things about my life. I definitely respect who they are. But I feel shut out.”

Talk about terribly troubling and sad! I have been an Isaac fan for 20 years. I used to love buying items from his Target collection and watching Unzipped, a behind-the-scenes look at the prep for his 1994 collection, is hilarious viewing. He seems to genuinely love women and clothes and his mission is to make us feel beautiful.

Should such a good individual be shunned by the Jewish community, when he clearly has so much to offer? I say absolutely not! While I don’t expect the Orthodox to embrace his lifestyle, there are a ton of Reform congregations that would love to make him feel welcome (as it should be).

I truly believe that every Jew deserves to be recognized and accepted without reservation. So many members have been unfairly forced out, shamed out, and phased out; a needless practice that only hurts the community as a whole in the long run. Instead of division, we should be focused on unity. Instead of hate, we should be focused on love. Isn’t that the true meaning of community, after all…

My Experience with FreshBooks Cloud Accounting

Ask most small business owners what part of their job is the worst and I bet they’ll answer “Accounting!” I know that’s been the case for me, trying to keep everything organized for the blog. In the past, my system has been a combo of some hard copy mixed with online records (a typical yet very inefficient jumble). Receipts have inevitably been lost, costing me extra time and money!

After a recent strategy session to streamline my work responsibilities, I decided to take the plunge and get a good cloud accounting program called FreshBooks.

FreshBooks was originally created as an invoicing service, but it’s grown to include expense and time-tracking—valuable features that promote productivity while reducing waste.

The invoicing system is very user-friendly, even if you’re not techy. Using their templates, you can create professional-looking invoices complete with your own logo. When you’re ready to bill, simply send the invoice via email, download a PDF or print it with a single click. Clients can pay right from the invoice—even on a mobile device. Recurring invoices are even easier: auto-bill a client’s credit card so you never miss a payment. It works for any currency, so working with international clients is not a problem.

One feature I really like is the invoice history. Some clients are notoriously slow to pay and this allows me to see when/if it was viewed, then send a gentle reminder if needed.

Making the switch from paper to cloud can feel daunting at first, but the results were totally worth it. Instead of keeping huge filing cabinets, I now snap a picture of receipts/documents right onto my phone. Instead of guessing, I’m certain where the money is thanks to a customizable Expense report. I’m able to get a lot of work done on-the-fly rather than being stuck behind a desk.

FreshBooks users now have the ability to set up online ACH payments. (ACH is an acronym. It stands for Automated Clearing House. The Automatic Clearing House is a system that serves a network of financial institutions by helping them transfer funds electronically.)  ACH payments are pulled directly from one person’s account and sent to another. It removes the check or card payment that usually serves as an intermediary step in the payment process.

Payments are processed in 3-5 days, eliminating long wait times for checks to clear. The fee is also super affordable—only 1%. Freshbooks will automatically mark the invoice as paid once the ACH transfer is made.

ACH is currently available only in the United States. Learn more about how ACH and FreshBooks can simplify your business here.
