Super Savings Saturday – 2/6/16

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

This week it was all about the drug stores. Because my fridge/freezer and cabinets were full, I didn’t set foot in a single grocery store (rare for me!). Sometimes I get burned out running from store to store, so this was a nice break for me. Of course, now we’re almost entirely out of food and I’ll have to do a mega shop next week, but that’s how it goes, right?

CVS:

3 Hallmark greeting cards, regular price $0.99. I used a $3.00/3 store coupon. Total: Free, plus $2.00 ECB’s.

Colgate toothpaste, on sale $3.00. I used a $2.50 store coupon stacked with a $0.50 manufacturer’s coupon. Total: Free!

2 Crispy M&M’s, on sale $0.99. I used a BOGO coupon. Total: $0.99, plus $0.75 ECB’s. (I thought theses were so gross, but the rest of the family loved them. Go figure!)

cerave-1Chloraseptic-Rite-Aid

Rite Aid:

2 CeraVe soap, regular price $6.99. I used 2 $3.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $7.98, plus $8.00 Plenti Points.

2 Chloraseptic sore throat lozenges, on sale $4.99. I used 2 $1.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $7.98, plus $8.00 Plenti Points.

Notice how the medicine was tagged but the soap isn’t? This is very common that not all sale items are marked, so I always double check by separating my transactions. Sure, some cashiers complain, but it’s my money and I like to make sure I’m only buying what’s actually a deal.

Pet Smart:

4 bags of clearance food, details here. Total: $3.37 each!

How was your shopping? Any freebies?

Creating Homemade Play Dough

pl

Art projects have got to be one of our favorite indoor activities. The latest experiment? Homemade play dough! Ok, I know it’s available in the store for only $1.00 a pack, but it also has toxic ingredients and I worry about a little one putting it in their mouth and accidently swallowing some. (Does that sound like a “Nervous Jewish Mother” stereotype? Yep, can’t help it…)

Since making it from scratch is pretty easy, I figured I’d give it a whirl. Here is the basic recipe which takes only 10 minutes to mix and 5 to heat:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 TSP cream of tarter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/2 TBS vegetable oil

Because I wanted to jazz it up, I customized, adding these goodies:

In place of water: Steep 2 TBS of rosemary in 8 ounces of boiling water for 20 minutes. This makes a tea-like infusion that smells delicious! Strain before using.

Essential Oil:  Add 1 TSP of Fir oil (pine or rosemary oil would also work). When using oils or extracts, add them at the beginning, before heating the play dough. They can be stirred in at the end, but the dough thickens so quickly, it’s best not to wait.

Food coloring: Anything you like!

The above picture shows the lovely green color and I can promise the scent is equally heavenly. It has a wintertime/woodsy feel that’s so nice this time of year.

I’m not sure of the exact cost, but the only expensive ingredients are the cream of tarter and essential oil. I buy mine at a bulk food store which is pretty reasonable when used sparingly. (I’ve heard white vinegar can be used as a substitute for cream of tarter, but I’ve not tried it personally. Similarly, a packet of Kool Aid can be used in place of oils.)

When properly sealed, homemade play dough should keep for months. Wide, shallow containers work better than jars because it’s easier to remove. I’d only use a jar if it was being given as a gift.

We had so much fun making homemade play dough, I’m sure we’ll do it again. The only thing I’d do differently is buy more food coloring so we could make different kinds and possibly add some glitter.

PetSmart: Huge Clearance on Pet Food

Talk about stumbling onto a good deal. While I was shopping at PetSmart for unrelated items, I found a huge bin of clearance pet food at the front of the store. Because the food is expiring or discontinued, the savings were huge!

Check out this grain-free lamb food, reduced by 50% for quick sale. That lowered the price to $7.49 and I had a $4.00 coupon. Total: $3.49!

There were also many bags of Hill’s Ideal Balance. I bought 2 bags of dog food and 1 for cats. There were all priced $9.99 and I used 3 $5.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $14.97.

Because PetSmart will accept competitor’s coupons, the deal got even better. I used a $5.00 off any $15.00 purchase. Grand total: $13.46 for 4, making it $3.37 a bag!

Clearance varies by location, but I was told by an employee that it’s nationwide, so I’d definitely check if you have a PetSmart close by.
