My Review of “Love Her, Love Her Not”

51qkhM52cqL

When you mention the name Hillary Clinton, people tend to have an immediate, gut reaction: They either adore her or despise her, with very little in between. Personally, I am not a fan of her politics and disagree with many of her ideas, but I find her fascinating nonetheless.

Joanne Cronrath Bamberger tackles this subject in her new book, Love Her, Love Her Not: The Hillary Paradox. She did an excellent job editing a compilation of 28 essays that range from the silly (“Worshipping Hillary’s Pantsuits”) to the thought-provoking (“The Responsibility of Privilege”). Each essay is short, making this a quick read for those who have small snippets of time like me. {I read a few chapters here and there, waiting at the doctor’s office, while using the treadmill, etc. I like essays because each stands on its own and you don’t have to worry about continuity.}

While Love Her, Love Her Not is definitely argued from a liberal point of view, not all of the writers are die-hard fans and there is some balance and criticism regarding her perceived phoniness and flip-flopping on key positions. Contributors include one of her neighbors in Chappaqua, a fellow Wellesley college alum, a young Millennial, a Southern writer that’s known her forever, and a Conservative who wants to hate her but can’t.

Bottom Line: Regardless of how you feel about Hillary, she is a force of nature in American politics and clearly will influence women for decades to come. I won’t be voting for her, but I’m very glad to see that a female candidate can succeed at the highest level and possibly become the President of our great country.

Super Savings Saturday – 1/30/16

Welcome to another edition of Super Savings Saturday!

This week was a mixed bag. By shopping the sales and using coupons, I was able to get many good deals, but it was not a fun experience. Long lines, rude cashiers, and a truly nightmarish trip to Shaws made it one big hassle.

Still, it was worth it in the end because I left home with a $5.00 bill and returned with 10 items and change! (Nobody ever claimed saving money was quick or easy…)

Rite Aid:

I had a $10.00 Catalina coupon that was about to expire, so I picked up a few items I always need.

Cutex polish remover, BOGO price $2.99.

Home brand trash bags, on sale $4.99.

Kleenex, regular price $2.49.

My total was $10.47. After using the Catalina, I only paid $0.47! Isn’t it awesome to get 4 items for only 2 quarters? Love that!

Shaws:

Normally I have no problem couponing here, but this turned into a 35 minute disaster! You had to buy 6 items to receive the Mega Sale price. My first attempt including 4 Kraft salad dressings and the cream cheese. They refused to accept the dressing coupons because they printed with “Redeemable at Walmart.” When I pointed out that they were manufacturer’s coupons and could be used anyway, they still refused. I asked them to cancel the transaction so I could swap my items.

Rather than do as I asked, they simply suspended it. When I tried to do my second transaction, the salad dressing wasn’t deducted and I had to fight with the cashier to remove them and fix the total. Very frustrating, but I wasn’t going to pay for items I wasn’t even buying!

Here’s how it ended up:

2 Philadelphia cream cheese, Mega Sale price $1.49. I used 2 $0.75 manufacturer’s coupons (doubled). Total: Free!

2 Cracker Barrel cheddar cheese, Mega Sale price $1.99. I used 2 $1.00 manufacturer’s coupons. Total: $0.99 each!

2 Kraft shredded cheese, Mega Sale price $1.99. I used 2 $0.75 manufacturer’s coupons (doubled). Total: $0.49 each!

Grand total for all 6 items was $2.96 which is less than the regular price for one bag of cheese.

3 Random Things I’m Enjoying

How about a silly little post that has nothing important to say? Since I’m feeling extremely exhausted, I thought I’d just muse about some random things I’ve been enjoying lately.

1. Cat Calendar

Since my calendar is something I look at every single day, I need the kind that’s inspirational. Looking at adorable pictures of cats and kittens just makes me feel happy! Definitely worth $4.95 for a year’s worth of smiles.

2. Salted Caramel Coffees

Ok, I’m supposed to be dieting, but I’ve been cheating a little bit by adding a spoonful of salted caramel syrup to my coffee every morning. The calorie count isn’t too high, but it adds considerably to my enjoyment. Plus, making them at home is way cheaper and healthier than Starbucks (no whipped cream).

3. Mildred Pierce

This HBO miniseries is an updated version of the 1945 film. With Kate Winslet taking over the original Joan Crawford role, you know it has to be good. {I am such a huge Kate Winslet fan, it’s not even funny! How does she manage such a perfect American accent?}

Set in California during the Great Depression, it focuses on a hard working single mother, the boyfriend who uses her and the devilish daughter that nearly ruins her life. Wonderful story and acting. I missed it during the original broadcast so I’m really glad I caught it in reruns.
