Books I Love – French Women Don’t Get Fat

a1

If you are tempted to follow fad diets, I would definitely recommend French Women Don’t Get Fat, written by Mireille Guiliano.

This book contains the simple strategies and tricks French women use to keep their figure for a lifetime. Sprinkled throughout are a number of good recipes and tips.

Mireille is a Frenchwoman who came to America as an exchange student. During that time she acquired a wonderful American trait—obesity. When she returned to France, she was reintroduced to the classic principles of French gastronomy by “Dr. Miracle.” They worked so well for her that she has never had a problem with being fat again, even though she lives in New York for half of each year.
Some of the tips are painfully obvious, but worth repeating:

*   Eat smaller portions.
*   Eat more vegetables.
*   Eat more fruit.
*   Don’t eat “fat-free” or “sugar-free” fake foods. Go for the real thing in moderation. (Remember those horrible Snackwell cookies from the ’90’s? Oh, I shudder at the memory!)
*   Enjoy real chocolate—not the watered-down, sugared-up kind that Americans call “chocolate.”
*   Don’t snack all the time.
*   Don’t let yourself become overly hungry.
*   Never eat standing up, on the run, and especially not in front of the TV.
*   Never eat til you feel stuffed.
*   Eat what’s in season.
*   Drink water all day long.
*   Walk everywhere you can.
*   Take the stairs whenever possible.
*   Don’t diet.
Overall, I thought the book had some excellent ideas and encouragement for those who struggle with their weight. The emphasis should be more on health than the number on the scale.

As for the recipes, the desserts seemed very tasty without being insanely sugary. I’d also like to try some of the chicken recipes from French Women Don’t Get Fat soon.

No-Cook Summer Supper

a1

When it’s hot and humid, cooking is something I dread! If you also need a break, try serving a No-Cook Summer Supper.

A No-Cook Summer Supper is composed of a prepared meat, drinks, raw veggie sticks (I used carrots and cukes), and a mixed fruit salad (anything you have on hand, or find on sale).

In addition to the cold sides, I like to pick up the prepared meat at the store. Shaw’s offers a $5.00 meat every Friday. This week the special was an 8-piece grilled chicken pack. Other weeks, I’ve seen rotisseries, roasted turkey breast, or fried chicken.

Add in some $0.50 iced tea, and you’ll have a real feast!

I like to lay out the platters of veggies, fruit, and chicken buffet-style, so that everyone can help themselves. This makes it extra easy on the hostess, who was tired and hot after running around all day getting free stuff.

A No-Cook Summer Supper ensures a delicious meal, no matter what the temperature is outside. Best of all, I didn’t have to turn on the oven and heat up the whole house!

Freebie Friday

a1

I’m calling today Freebie Friday, because I got some really cool stuff for No Money!

I started my hunt for freebies at Tropical Smoothie Café. I arrived only 5 minutes after the promotion began (2:05), and there was already a line stretched out the door! Since I was thirsty, I waited and spent the next 20 minutes chatting with other folks in line. Tropical Smoothie Café employs mostly teenagers, who seemed very overwhelmed and were less than courteous…

The end result: a delicious Jetty Punch which is a strawberry/banana smoothie that usually costs $4.95. I don’t know if it was worth waiting, but it did taste great.

Only a few people were donating to Camp Sunshine. Those who did got to write their name on a sandal and hang it up.

I then moved on to Cumberland Farms, looking for a free Chill Zone. There was no line and the cashiers were very friendly. My only problem was selecting a flavor. I settled on Pinkasaurus, which is awesome!

I really enjoy getting frosty cold drinks on a hot summer day—especially when it doesn’t cost a dime.
